| Did Truk (Chuuk) Oct. 2003 aboard Odyssey. Absolutely excellent liveaboard, free Nitrox, spacious cabins. Crew couldn't have been better. One of the top two liveaboards I've been on, excellent return for the bucks. IMO a land-based trip in Chuuk cannot compare, cuisine, comfort, class. Your call, Seadeuce |

I booked flights and both dive packages etc on line, very easily. Blue Lagoon is nice, a tranquill spot on an island which is pretty run down (very bad roads, drainage and sewage problems, and very poor, through mismanagement by the government), and I should know, spending a year roaming the pacific islands! There are other land centres, such as Truk Stop, but these are in town, and I don't recommend being there, if you can avoid it. As a land based centre Blue Lagoon is probably the best, certainly the accommodation is very good. Diving is from skiffs which will either go out all day, or return at lunch time, depending on which dives you do. There isn't a lot of room on board, but the smaller boats will just take 2-4 divers, so you can pretty much do your own thing. It's ok if you don't mind fairly long journey's in small boats.... Thorfinn was an interesting experience. The captain runs it as a "fifedom" with various ex-wives and mistresses on board all living together! He is a good laugh though. Crew were excellent. They dive 2 boats from the liveaboard, up to 5 dives a day, each boat going to different locations. All the info and itinery is posted the day before, so you decide what you want to do. They will also try and accommodate what you want to do. Although this is a liveaboard, it rarely moves from it's anchorage, and the samller boats (now ribs) travel from the mother ship. I found this quite ok, and a lot shorter than land based. Dive choices are planned to get progressively shallower through the day. I only bothered doing the 5 dives on one day (too tired!) but usually did 4. I can recommend Thorfinn. It was also much cheaper than the Agressor and the other liveaboard, which I think pulled out this year. I have friends who have dived the Agressor, but this seems to go to one site and do a couple of dives on it each day, before relocating, and there is so much to see! Hope that helps? If you need any more info, drop me a PM Cheers Chris |
