| I've been twice to Playa Del Carmen in recent years, which is a short boat ride from Cozumel or about 50 miles away from Cancun. This or Tulum would be the best location, if you are planning on teaching/guiding cavern diving as you are very close to the many Cenotes in the area. Last year I dived with a company called Tank Ha, they were of European ownership. The majority of their instructors/guides were European. The two I remember were German & Dutch. The other dive operators in the town tended to be owned by locals, and using local guides. I personally wouldn't use one of the local operators again as I found them to be very slack on safety etc. The only other operators using European instructors would be the hotel dive centres. Their is a place called Playacar, near to Playa Del Carmen, where you will find all the major hotel chains, Riu, Iberostar, Wyndeham etc. That might be worth a try... I can't really say much about the cost of living, what I can tell you is that Cozumel is hugely inflated as it is a port of call for the cruise ships. Cancun & Playa Del Carmen are expensive in the town centres as they are geared up for tourism, especially the Americans. Out of the town centres I believe it is cheap, as it is still a developing country. Hope you make it over there as diving the Cenotes is a truly amazing experience, I'm already plotting my return!!! |
