Question Whaaaaaaaaale Shaaaaaaaaark!

I hope to be shouting that at some point in December!

Off to Thailand for a pre-Xmas jolly Anyone know if you can expect to see said ginormous fishy at any Thai dive areas in December?

I know they are a seasonal lot, but anyone who can give me any hope will get some green.

Cheers all

Al

Not sure about where you are going, but we were in Kenya last November and they appeared. Nov/Dec is about the right time for them I think.

Good luck!

Don't want to disappoint you, but that is not the best time. Most sightings of whale sharks are from March till May, at Hin Daeng, Hin Muang and Richelieu Rock.

You do have a reasonable chance of manta rays though, mostly also at Hin Daeng, Hin Muang and also at Koh Bon. But also for them: December is a bit early in the season.

Cheers guys!

Oh well, if it's not whale shark season in Dec, I'll just have to go back in March

Hi Al

I was lucky enough to see a whale shark in December 2003 on the safety stop after diving the Bang Sac wreck (just outside Khao Lak) - It was amazing! There were a couple of other boats there at the same time, and one of the instructors on another boat had been diving there for 2 years - it was the first time he'd ever seen one. I was extremely lucky that day...!

Best of luck on your quest - you'll love the diving out there, even if you don't get to see a whale shark.

Lisa

Off to Mozambique in 1 week - whale shark city! Little early in the season for Moz but last time we were there we saw 18 in a single boat trip and saw/snorkeled with them on every offshore dive. Oh and they have Manta rays almost year round too. From there its off to Protea Banks for Bull Sharks and hopefully hammerheads.
2 years since I've been in Southern Africa and I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!! Just got to get through one more shitty week at work.

Whale Shark spotted on 8th October

Hello,

I was out in Thailand untill the 10th of October and on the 8th saw a whale shark at Sail Rock near to Koh Tao. This was a very small specimen at around 5-6 meters and i believe that they stay around Thailand untill about 3 years of age and then venture out. Im not sure about seeing one in December but i would not rule it out if some babies have just been born. Best of luck.

Adie
