Mango inn is a great place to stay, very friendly staff and decent enough rooms. The diving is AWESOME!!!!
The cheapest way to do it once your in country is to get a bus from San Pedro to La Ceiba and get the ferry from there.
The best tip I can give you is get to grips with some basic spanish before you arrive as this will make your life a lot easier.
Oh, and the water was 30 degrees last week so I wouldn't worry about a wetsuit

Thanks for that!

Thomas e has been good enough to pm me with some info as well - he's worked for their dive centre for 5 years

I did Spanish A level (many years ago) so it would hopefully come back to me!

Utila is where I took my Open water in... 1996 - wow that is a long time! I'm sure there have been a million and one changes since. I believe there are direct flights to Utila from USA, otherwise as mentioned go to San Pedro de Sula. You may want to check with Iberia or KLM for flights from europe. Going via USA will be a bit more of a hassle.

I took a bus between San Pedro & La Ceiba but there I took a short hop of a flight to Utila. It was an old DC3 and the runway was a dust track with a wooden shack. the pilots got off , had a cold beeer before hoping back on to the mainland.
Utila was very laid back and heard it was still the case, there were no cars then but easy to get knocked by a bicycle. The place I stayed was at the main crossroads and cost me a dollar a night, I got bitten by the sandflies and the sores absesed taking months to heal, but at least I got my diving done

Must go back, great place.

BTW didn't it get hit recently by a hurricane?

It looks a bit different now, judging by the website! It seems like you have to fly to Miami, then down to Honduras and get a short flight or ferry to Utila.

And apparently the hurricane hasn't affected the island, so that's good news.
