Florida and diving

All good responses. In my trips to Florida, I've done the manatee snorkel (you might get two days if the family agrees to go on this excursion with you--kids do love it); I've done Ginnie (you dive within the light zone and don't do penetration, so no cave/cavern certs required); and I've dived off Palm Beach County in the Atlantic.

These are all good options. Since diving in springs is something not commonly available (Cancun, Florida, Brazil, and maybe Italy), I would go with this option for the diving and try to convince the family to join you on a manatee snorkel trip too.

I think most manatees migrate out of the springs in March, depending upon how cold the Gulf is. It was one of my truly remarkable experiences snorkelling as they come up so close you scratch their bellies. They are so gentle and patient as I was scratching one manatee and I turned my head to the left, another one was literally parked on my left shoulder waiting for her turn to be scratched. I haven't dove at Ginnie so cannot advise about that. I know the wrecks from Ft. Lauderdale leave late (8ish) in the morning as the wrecks are pretty close - unlike here in New York where we have to get up at four!!! Good luck in whatever you decide to do. And yes, the Gulf is really shallow for miles and miles.

Palm Beach is worth a look. This is a previous thread.

Florida Recommendations

The problem with diving Ginnie on " the outside" is that you will want to go back and do a cave course and that would require some serious negotiations with the management

You can do a dive in the disney epcot centre and amuse the kids through the glass

Disney Divequest its called. Expensive but probably worth doing once for a laugh.

The keys are a LONG way but if prepared to travel a bit then apparently there is decent diving off Fort Lauderdale.
