Thanks to you all for the replies. I'll gladly take a PADI instructor with me from here...but she'll have to be about 18 with a fabulous body and be willing to pay her way in various ways. She'll also need to be very discreet so my wife doesn't notice that she's there!!!!

Seriously, thanks for the advice so far, I guess my best option will be to complete over here but assuming the regulations there are so relaxed I could probably get some dives in anyway for some open water experience before I complete here, I'm visiting as part of a wedding party and another member of our group is an experienced diver so I've already got a buddy lined up!

If you intend diving without the proper qualification, make sure you check your insurance cover. A rapid ascent from 20m can still land you in the pot or worse.

If a centre doesn't care if the customers are qualified or not, will it have the right level of care when you are in the water?

Many people say diving isn't rocket science, which is why many of the entry level courses are so short, but there is a big difference in doing skills in a pool and being taken out into open water to goodness knows what depth.

Be careful

If the regulations were so lax that any one could get in a car and drive down the M1 at any speed (and did) would you do it with out any lessons?

Complete the course over here so that you have some real life expirence and some confidence before going in the sea. Without doing so best case is that you dive and spend all your time aclimatising, middle case is you shoot to the surface and spend time in the pot and have to pay becuase your insurance wont cover it, worst case you ruin the wedding in a most inappropriate fashion.
