Calabria - Italy, Anybody Been There???

Has anyone been to Calabria or around that area in Italy?

If so do you have any info on the diving and if it's worth taking my gear with me?

Thanks.

OK, found there is diving to be had in the area, not sure how long I'll be out there but could be a couple of weeks or a couple of months.

Just need to decide if I'm going to take the unit with me, any advice, someone must have been in the area?

Not been quite that far south but did look into it, and my relatives over at the moment are from further north......I'll ask them later when they get it what they know. Any way from enquiries I have made in the past some good WWII wrecks in area but not sure on depth or distance from shore.

Not many scuba centres but would say its got to be worth a go....... you'll kick ya self if you dont take it and these is some.

I'll check with the relatives later and get back to you tomorrow.

Hi,
try Dino Sub based at Dino island (Isola Dino) at Praia A Mare on the west coast of Calabria. They have a website (Dinosub - home page). Some wrecks around the area and some good grottos around the island itself which is only a couple of hundred meters from the shore. They also go slightly north to Maratea too I think. The area in general has fantastic clear waters and loads of empty beaches (except for August) and I can thoroughly recommend it. I like the area so much that I have a holiday home there but haven't dived there yet as I have only just completed my pool sessions of an open water referral course but can't wait to get out and dive there.

I will gladly give advice on the area if you are going to that part of Calabria

LeeP

Ivon, done a bit of research and there is indeed a wreck in the area, a french merchant ship sunk in 1943 by HMS Torbay, a British submarine. I've also found out that it's right in front of my apartment!!!
