sharm hotels

looking to go to Sharm in May, can anyone recommend a good quality hotel in which to stay preferably with a good dive centre nearby and also a good base with plenty to do both day and night as my wife doesn't dive, previously stayed in Hurghada at the Grand Resort 5*, Red Sea Hotels: Hotel Details would like something along the same lines

The only time I stayed in a non-diving place in Sharm was a few years ago when we stayed at the Hilton Farouz. The rooms are bungalows set in gardens and it is very posh and not too expensive.

As for things to do for non-divers...... well there's :
snorkelling
Swimming
boat trips (from the Hilton beach, daily I think)
Aqua aerobics
desert trips for dinner in a bedouin camp
desert trips on camel or horse
Desert trips on quad bikes
trips to St Catherine's monastery
And lying on a sun bed sunbathing or reading.

The Hilton Farouz does have its own dive centre but is easy waliking distance to Oonas divers, Camel and a few other good dive centres. Most pick up from your hotel.

All the sea front hotels are pretty posh if you like that sort of thing. Personally, I prefer spit and sawdust, laid back places and would prefer Dahab to Sharm any day. Sharm is now like Blackpool full of twittering Italians and Russians. And you can't walk a few paces without people trying to sell you things.

Another thing that has spoilt Sharm over the last 10 years is the fact that they have tried to make gardens on thesea front (in a natural desert) so previously mosquito -free places are now mosquito city and you may get bitten to death!!!!!!

Don't want to put you off, it's still OK but I think Sharm is a bit over-rated and spoiled.

Jolieville Movenpick (Beach-side) in Naama bay. Really nice hotel, right in the centre, a couple of hundred yards from the Camel Bar for instance, but still very quiet within the hotel grounds. Best of both worlds.

Has it's own dive operation which I wouldn't touch with a bargepole, but only about 200 hundred yards from Red Sea College along the promenade which is generally well reviewed.

I agree, Sharm is no longer a place I want to go to except to get on board a liveaboard. And as for the bl**dy Russians, so no more!!!!

The Sheraton is stunning. Stayed there a couple of times and would again without hesitation. There is a dive center on the beach called Aquarius and found them to be a very good outfit.

A couple of photos of the Sheraton I took in Jan/Feb 05:

Cheers,

Ian

Iberotel Famara, right on the cliff overlooking Ras On Sid dive site and with
it's own beach.

Iberotel Club Fanara & Residence
Iberotel Club Fanara & Residence - Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt

Used the Dive school on site about 6 times now and 3 with pretty large
groups. Extremely good and very professional.

We did our OW with them- excellent instructor who was a very very strict but encouraging Swiss lady ( as they should be). You either nailed the skill she wanted demonstrating or it was do not pass go, do not collect cert card!
