Some years ago we found 3-4 big fishing boats getting rusty in dry dock in Limassol. The idea was to get the boats and sink them in the old Amathus area and create an artificial reef.
The idea stopped when government was not giving permission for sinking the boats because the cost of cleaning the boats and sinking the boats was too high, they wanted an enviromental report and the local fishermen were against the idea.
There is no way something like that will happen soon in Cyprus. Government officials have no idea how many people such a project will attrack. They think that they will have no income from this. They are so narrowminded.

you're so right and it's a shame. i wonder if the government has any idea how many divers come to cyprus for the zenobia alone. it must be small change in the big scheme of things

I know what you mean and can share your pain. It takes time ! When I was doing my thesis way back in 2000, top guys from the Tourism industry were totally against the idea of these artifical reefs. Altough at that time we had the faroud they were after impact assessments and all the reports in the world. I think they changed their mind when the same people so the success of the Faroud.

I think that the aquiring and cleaning of the vessles is not incurred by the govt. Altough a little help is given the cost are mainly incurred by the malta marine foundation.
