egypt-deep south info please

am sort of looking at booking a liveaboard to do what is known as 'deep south' in May time. Sounds fab but the only thing that puts me off was the bit that said something like 'conditions can be rough so avoid in winter' Now I am not the best sailor in the world and get sea sick quite easily so would this be really rough and tumble? And again currents- I dont mind some but I am going on holiday to enjoy myself and dont want to exhaust myself with hard finning all the time so if anyone has gone around this time of year I would appreciate feedbcak !!

I have done this trip a couple of times in the May / June timeframe. Predominantly the wind came from the north, so at the beginning of the trip [1], which is farther out to sea (Elphinstone, Daedalus), the wind is coming from behind you......and makes for a more pleasant ride. The return journey is into the wind but closer to the coast so not as rough as it might be.

The first time I did the trip, most of the people went "quiet" during the final long passage North and some were properly ill. Last time I did it though, I can't recall anyone being sick.

[1] Assuming you do the same trip I did

Hi,

I've done Souther trips in May, June and December. May was very calm, June - OK, December was larger waves and swells. I take Stugeron 2nr in the am plus if it get rough I lay down on my bed but am normally OK. I was seasick on Xmas day down South only as I was on the zodiac waiting for a twin set diver to re-appear!

So in conclusion all were OK and were very enjoyable, currents wise they are there all year round but nothing to worry about. The best time down South at St Johns etc is May, sharks and the big stuff are around until June and come back when the water gets cooler after the summer. Travel times are long going to St Johns - I prefer the Brothers, Daedulus and Elphinstone - and always go with Blue O Two, any other queries pm me.

thanks

thanks both for the info. Well I can get sick in a swimming pool sometimes!! but other times when its rough I am all ok! Bit strange despite taking stugeron. I am a tad impetuous and in between my posting and looking for replies I have booked myself a trip going with Blue O2 on the MVHorizon I think. At least I have a little time to get some money together and for my flexible friend to get used to the thought! Never been on a liveabaord before and going by myself but hopefully everything will go smoothly!

Dont worry - it can be flat calm! depends upon the wind/direction etc. Blue Horizon is excellent I've been on it - the dive guides are Karin and Dray (husband and wife) who are excellent - Horizon has just won top liveaboard as well -so you cant go wrong.

The boat is 40m long so it takes alot to make it uncomfortable - where are you going on your trip?

I'm going to the Brothers/Daedulus and Elphisntone (again) in Sept this year on Blue Melody.

I did Rocky Island/ St Johns etc a couple of years ago in August. I was not that impressed at all. We spent 12 hours travelling at a time between some of the sites. Well hardened salty sea dogs were hurling left right and centre, one person bust their lip falling down and another chipped a bone in his elbow.

I'm a good sailor and even I was nauseous and knackered.

Still, it maight be flat calm and wonderful.

I would rather go and do Marsa Shagra again any day. I prefer the dive sites and there was much better fish life on shore dives there than on the liveabaoard.

It could be we just had a bad trip. You might enjoy it.

Did Rocky, St Johns and Fury Shoal etc and agree its a very long way to go when there's not that much big stuff to see. Best month to see big stuff at St Johns etc is in May- but you cant make an appointment with a fish/mammal!!!

Stugeron doesn't work for me, I use Dimenhydrinate, which you can't get in the UK. You may get it in Sharm though. Enjoy your trip, I still haven't been to the Red Sea!!
