Bali advice

Hi All,

I'm off to Bali for a 2 week family hol in the summer.

I've not been there before so would appreciate any local dive advice.

eg "must do" sites, dive operators to go with, or to avoid.

As long as the site is worth it I'm happy with either shallow bimble or trimix for deeper stuff. Not interested in depth just for the sake of it.

Cheers, John

The wreck of the Liberty at Tulamben is a really nice dive, some of the other areas around there are pretty good as well.
A trip out to Nusa Penida to look for Mola Mola is also well worth a day out, especially if you can get a drift dive through the strait afterwards.

Enjoy it

HTH

PS: The $10 RayBans that you will be offered every few feet are probably not genuine.

I'll second that (The Liberty at Tulamben). Did a few nice dives on it and around the that area a couple of years ago.

Hi John,
have you planned anything yet? If not take a look at what we got up to
in Oct' last year: BSAC TRAVEL CLUB - Trip Reports - Bali, Indonesia
(As this may give you some pointers?)
Bali's not about depth...it's about pelagics and currents!
I'm not 100% sure if you can get trimix out there, but it's not really that type of destination, although you will get nitrox.
We had a great time, friendly people, and as cheap as chips for food and drink if you hunt out the right places.
The diving can be knackering though, but worth it.
We taylored our holiday so we could dive all the best sites.
Anyway, the best of luck with your plans.
Brian

Thanks all for the info. The Liberty ship was on the list

My hol is with a non-diving wife soI have to fit in a few days of dives around her, rather than tailoring the holiday to suit the dives.

Brian - thanks for the link to your trip report. I will be staying in Sanur so much of this is relevant. FWIW, trimix is available in at least 2 locations (BIDP and also at the sister shop to Bali Scuba).

Interesting comment on the water temps. I was planning on a 3 but mak go for the 5 instead (or maybe 3 + hood + vest).

cheers, John

Hi John,
yes of course..there two dive centres that deal with trimix. It's me I'm losing it (must be my age)!? I've even mentioned it in the write-up (Baliscuba has tech' facilities) they even showed me round the compressor room (what a muppet) plus BIDP as you say.
We were diving during a full moon period last Oct' so there was alot of tidal movement/currents, which is probably why we experienced the conditions we did. A 5mm w/suit should be adequate, but you shouldn't need a hood.
If you're staying in the Sanur area definitely check-out Baliscuba as they've got some excellent guides and nothings too much trouble (and they're local). The big noise out there is Aquamarine Diving basically because it's British run and owned by Annabel Thomas, and she advertises alot in the mags.
But they're based a few miles up the coast (not in Sanur). I believe she runs an all girl outfit too..if you can believe the gossip??!!
We stayed in the Santrian as you know, but another nice place is the Tandjung Sari which is more or less next door.
Anyway all the best with your plans.
Brian

Thanks Brian,

all girl outfit sounds good (i assume that's the guides not the custoomers !) though I'm not sure my wife would be too please.

Cheers, John

Hi John

18 months ago myself and non-diving partner went for a 2 week holiday to Bali and stayed at Sanur - The Hyatt Regency.

Before departing i arranged a dive package with a local company. The owner, Jonathan Cross, was absolutely fantastic. I have his contact details at home so i'll post them once i get back along with a list of all the sites i did.

When i was there i did 5 speciality courses Deep,Night, Drift, Wreck and Nitrox. I took all my own equipment and for all the above courses which consisted of 15 dives i only paid $400 = £200 approx. The instruction was one on one. They kept all my equipment at their dive centre, washed and dried it all and it was there ready for me on each dive when thet picked me up from the hotel.

I thought they were absolutley fantastic and the service and attention was second to none.

I'll post details later, hope this helps

thanks

Mark
