Cheers, Malcolm.
Spook it ? I was snorkelling and could probably drop to a depth of 4m for about 1min max. I think when it came to manoeuverability in the water column it definately had me beat.
Yes I was close, it was swimming towards me. Yes I could have swam away and not got the shot. I decided to stay where I was and take the picture.

From My friend currently in the Maldives....

Weather inMaldives in June: basically it is nice all year round. It is best in Dec and Jan as the monsoon season is happening a bit more in June but having said that it will most likely be scattered showers, still be warm and poss a bit windy but that can be nice. Unseasonal things are happening at the moment we have had lovely weather recently as expected but in Feb when it should have been lovely it was very stormy so nothing to say you could have amazing weather in june. I have been here a year and on the whole it has been great all the time.

Anything special to see: not sure if this means under or above water. Basically with the Maldives you have a resort you are staying at, the resort will meet you at the airport when you fly in and then you will be based at the resort, it is not a country for travelling around. You see more if you are on a safari boat. From resorts you can do island visits to local islands which is interesting, otherwise main attractions are underwater or things that are at the resort like visiting the spa. Going to Male (the capital) is worth a miss! Underwater in June well it really depends on where you are going. It is the start of the Manta season on the east coast of the country and there are big quantities of them increasing as you go into August time. If they know where they are staying I may be able to help more.

Cuisine, you are likely to be based at a resort so the cuisine will cover everything, you will be able to get what ever you want really, there will be a heavy fish content and focus on Asian food.

The quality of snorkeling will very much depend on the island and resort you are staying on. The 2 resorts I have worked at have very different snorkelling. the further away from Male and out of North Male Atoll you go generaly the better the snorkelling because less people, more coral.

Hope that helps. SHe's only in the Maldives for a few more days before she leaves and returns to cold snowy England, but if you want to know anymore then I can pass on a message

Hi many thanks for that fiji dave although there is one last thing if you could help?
we are in a position to be able to get flights and hotels/resorts through a place called touchdown. we actually want to stop at one island for one week and another island for the next could this be possible an if so how could we do it? is there transport to neibouring islands on other attolls for instance?

many thanks once again.

You would probably have to go back to Male either by seaplane or boat. There really isn't a huge difference between islands, so I don't think there's much to be gained from island hopping. Which ones are you thinking of?

Jan is good. Dec can be horrible, especially early Dec as the monsoon normally doesn't switch until halfway thru the month. I went one year and it rained for a week, and not just thunderstorms, it was grey all day and raining continuously. The next year, I went at Xmas and the dive staff all told me how lucky I'd been not to come early as it had been pouring with rain.

I did island for 4 nights, safari boat for 1 week then island for 3nights in late july and aug. Superb weather: hot, mild occasional breeze, 1 thunderstorm (amazing). Mix and match should be no problem and I reckon that's the best option.
