has anybody dived the s.s. firelight off the northeast coast in about 36m, would be glad of any marks for this wreck as it is said to be almost intact and a casualty of the first world war and any info about the state of the site today

Hi Andy

She is at position 55 01 213N 001 19 155W in 36m, being the lowest astronomical depth and 2-miles east from the Tyne south pier light. She's upright, fairly intact and standing up to 9m high with quite a bit damage to the bow section and the highest part is from the stern to amidships. Lots of cod, pout-whiting and coleys about.
The FIRELIGHT was a 1143-ton British steamship owned by The Gas Light & Coke Co and built as the ROOKWOOD in 1896 by J.Blumer & Co. at Sunderland. She was torpedoed by UC 29 on 1st May 1917. The crew all got away safely in the ship's boats.

Cheers Ron

Locally known as 'Dirty wreck'. Well visted by the local fishermen.
