UC-39 Info

Diving this soon out of Brid'.
Anyone got some concrete info on this one for me. Googled it and only found one dodgy report from a uni dive club with limited information.

I'm after:-

Depth (I've been told 26 - 30 depending on tidal state)
Any dodgy currents? Doubt it based on location but just in case.
Oreintation / state
Typical visibility on the wreck site
Sub Class?
Any known history
Any restrictions - i.e. war grave etc?

Thanks

The wreck lies in 24m being the lowest astronomical depth, so it will depend on the state of the tide at the time.
It has been well and truly plundered over the past ten years, The two bronze propellers have also been recovered and one of them is said to be on display in Bridlington Harbour Museum, along with a large brass shell casing. There are also rumours that the remains have been recently blown up with explosives.
Although there are no restrictions on it, the wreck is a war grave to the following crewmen
Albert U-Maschinistenmaat d.Res
Bickel U-Heizer
Böttcher U-Obermaschinistenmaat
Döring U-Maschinist Anw
Ehrentraut, Otto Oberleutnant zur See
Ricke U-Maschinistenmaat d.Res
Roszgowski U-Matrose

Cheers Ron

Depth sounds about right, possibly a little deeper, have to check out my old logs.
No particularly bad currents, don't recommend this weekend though. To the best of my knowledge, slack is about 1.5 hrs after low/high water at Brid.

Can be a Tw*t to anchor into, so best use a shot. It's not a big target so patience might be called for.
Wreck is pretty much intact (pressure hull) apart from the large hole in the middle where it has been blown apart for salvage. Battery copartment is open. The outer hull is all but missing, though sections can be seen on the seabed where it has peeled away. Entry is possible, but not recommended as there is a lot of hanging cables and old net on it. It should be considered a war grave, as lives were lost, though "technically" it isn't, as it is a German vessel. There is a lot of silting inside (several feet deep in parts). Interesting bits, the through hull mine chutes at the front. Anchor chain and hawser pipes at very front of pressure hull, battery and motor compartments. Think the gun has been removed, as never seen it, but you can find the odd shell laying about in the sand.

For history etc look here: uboat.net - U-boat War in WWI - U-boat Index

you should manage 2 circuits without any deco.......

I reckon CD is more like 26 metres on this wreck. Normal HW Neap results in approx 30metres, maybe a touch over.

Only the forward third of the pressure hull remained last time I did it. On the last time that I dived it, there was a lot of rusty metal edges about and german (broken) crockery around the wreck. It was apparent that more of the pressure hull had disappeared, probably due to explosives but that is a guess. The crockery certainly wasnt there on previous dives. Was a bit dis-heartning. I have had 12metres viz on this wreck. I dont remember it being particularly silty as its a sand/shell seabed. I have a feeling it also lies across the tidal flow so fairly easy to shot.

Its a nice wreck and I hope it hasn't been blown up more.
A big swell can churn it up too.

If you are diving it a report would be nice.

Gary

The dive should be on 7th October. Though not confirmed yet. I'll do a report if it happens.

Dived it many times depth is as stated, its open midships at the officers compartment, if you look inside you will see a round hatch leading forward into the control room. I wouldnt recomend entry as someelse has said lots of wires hanging. Also where the props were blown off you can see in. Atack priscope is also still visable although the other was removed. Its a good dive and still enjoy it. If your into subs let me know as there are some others in the area.

Restferret.

You're Rustferret now.

Have you done any of the further out subs?
