U 12 found at last !!!

Hi all,

well Marine Quest from Eyemouth took a team out yesterday to dive a mark I belived to be the last resting place of the WW1 U boat U 12 and it was

http://www.marinequest.co.uk/

Martin Sinclair & Jim Macleod are doing a press release with all the details and I will post it when its done ! They have spent many hours diving looking for this U boat and have added a fair bit to our knowledge of the wrecks in the Firth of Forth ! All their hard work has now paid off !!!

The wreck is in 48 meters and nearly 20 miles from where Clive Cussler had claimed to have found her in 1984 !

North Sea and English Channel Hunt

This false position has led many people to search in the wrong area, but myself, Martin & Jim went back to basics which moved the whole search area to the position she was found yesterday.

Leigh G was due to join them but could not make it and I know she is gutted !!!

all the best

Kevin

U12

Well done Guys!

What state was she in? How far out of Eyemouth?

Hope Iain will add her to his increasing list of not too deep dives out of Eyemouth.

Kevin,
So are you saying Clive Cussler's reported position was wrong, or that they wrongly identified a different wreck?

Well done to everyone though for finding U-12
Rob

Clive Cussler said he found her in the position on his website but there is nothing there and she was found approx 20 miles away from that position ! I guess he miss identifed anther wreck in that general area ! Martin and Jim have found a few trawlers in that box

Rob,

The problem here is actually pretty simple: The commonly listed loss location of 56°07'N, 2° 20'W is simply wrong and Cussler's group used that position.

Dwight Messimer's book Verschollen hints at the problem: A trawler reported the U-boat at about 56°15'N, 1° 56'W at 0900 on March 10, 1915 and destroyers attacked her about an hour and 10 minutes later...

Best wishes,
Michael

SteveJ,
The sub is lying upright on a sandy seabed, in 48m, there is corrosion and collision damage of the outer hull , other than that it's very intact. There are several trawls which have snagged on the hydroplanes and props etc but nothing scary.
It's just over 2 hours out on Marine Quest's boat, and I'm sure it's on Iain's menu for the diving public.
Regards Jim
