Hi.

There should be a makers name on, and there are usually numbers stamped on the hinge of the frame and the opening port hinge, both should be the same number showing that the two halves were matched and made for each other.

When you have identified these clues.

Hi Mark are you trying to identify the wreck or just info about the porthole? If you know when and where the ship was built it will give you some ideas as most were brought/made near to the shipyards, just an idea?

kevin,

Thnx for the answer, I'm trying to identify the wreck, but since there is nothing left of it i thought i will start with the porthole.

Nothing is written on it and i thought that maybe someone can find some clues on the porthole like shape, catch type or position, the fact that there was a dead light and the fact that the catches are closed with spanner.

If ill be able to identify the origin of the porthole , it will be easier to trace the origin of the ship.

Hi Mark,

I'm assuming from your location that you are in or around Tel Aviv and I assume the wreck is around this area as well?

is the date you gave (1920-1930) a guesstimate?

How many boilers?

Is there an engine? If so, what type - Compound, Triple Expansion. . . . ?

Steve,
Yes the date is guesstimate, thats the date it sunk according to the local stories. It's a steel ship with pins so it was built before. The length is around 50 meters.

I found only the two boilers attached to each other and there is some kind of heat exchanger near the boilers.

Using the excelent info on SWM it looks like bolt down dogs so a passanger ship, two dogs so new arround 1915 onwards and even Ican tell it used to have a dead lite cover

You can take a sample of the brass and get it dated?

The porthole may have came from a P & O ship?, they some times have Square lugs as shown on our porthole, Also your port hole had a dead light attached which would suggest accomadation, cabin or office.
Hope this may help. Yoda

Hi Mark
So do'es this mean most portholes from 1915 had 2 fastenings? I have a porthole from an unidentified French wreck. It has only 1 "dog" (is that the real name?), also the outer ring was iron and literally fell apart in my hands, does that mean it was a very cheap one?

Mine has 2 Dogs and the ship was built in 1883, it could have been upgraded as they were on 1st Class cabins, but she sank on 9 March 1900
