calling all YD wreck detectives

righto, here's a mission for the YD wreck detectives.......

I've searched the usual sites and still can't come up with anything. . .

I'm looking for info on a steamship that definately sunk between Start Point in Devon and Dodman Point, Cornwall.

The ship is called the Mervestroom. She is possibly Dutch and was en route from Dordt (Dordrecht), Holland to Liverpool in ballast. She sprung a leak, was abandoned and then foundered. She had a five man crew who were all saved and landed at Brixham by a passing vessel . . . .

That's all i have. I need to find the dimensions, tonnage and engine type. Anything else will be a bonus. . . .

EDIT - forgot to add, she sunk between 15th and 20th October 1882

Approx year?

Also have you tried swapping the v for a w? Dutch more likely to be W?

Was it salvaged? Hollandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij

Sorry Jo and Adrian,

Forgot to add the date of sinking. OP now amended. She sunk between 15th and 20th October 1882.

I had tried some variations on the spelling, but still came up with nothing. . .

'Mervestroom (Merwestroom)', GOEDE, Dordrecht, d:o(ballast).
[01.06.1859 Finlands Allmänna Tidning no 125 ]

Whatever that lot means. 01/06/1859 - date of launch maybe?

EDIT: I think Finlands Allmänna Tidning is a newspaper

Vessels were built at Kristinestad. There must be some form of register that it is on.
