Wrecksite . The ultimate wreck rescource.

Well its up and running and growing day by day. If you are keen on wreck diving this is the site for you. The 25 Euro yearly fee to access 25,600 Hydrographic wreck details is a gift. Remember it used to be about £3 per wreck. The Admiralty didnt want it to go this way but Brussels dictated otherwise. Wrecksite has left the unborn Shipwreck Index dead in the water.
To search for a wreck put the name in the search box or bring up the necessary chart and click the wreck.Yes, you dont even have to buy charts anymore.
Click pictures on the main menu and you can filter your search, " Findings " will lead you to spidge. Click the image to bring up the image browser. You can magnify the image. Useful when looking at ship photos.
There are other useful links in the main menu. Divers like us are catching on and uploading their own photos and information. To be honest the upload process seems a bit long at times but then I do scan at 300 dpi. I am starting the long job of uploading all my wreck information and photos. At least then a permanent record has been made. So now there is no excuse not to record discoveries and identifications. So much was lost in the early years. Bells tucked away and the wreck not identified for others. A crime in my eyes.
The Hydrographic info is still a bit patchy regarding identities. Nothing as bad as it was when I started my diving. At least now you have the chance to put it right.

I didnt put up the link in case my log in came with it.
Search Google and add to bookmarks.

    Use Miramar for ship details.

What do you mean by Brussels dictating otherwise Nick? UKHO wreck information for minimal cost is a drop in the ocean compared to free or very cheap access to the huge amounts of data our taxes have paid for now and in the past.

The Hydrographic Office wanted to remain in control of their wreck information .
It was an EU overriding decision that prevented that. Dont ask me about the politics re. that. Originally I was a bit unsure of the consequences about that but now I feel it was a good thing for divers and researchers who wanted to add a little more to the database in terms of photos and sketches. It is much easier to update as well. The moderators are first class and keep the whole thing tidy.Tony Allen in particular has put in an enormous amount of effort.
I dont think one or two skippers were happy but in this freedom of information age thats the way we are going. I think there is about a three month time lag between a new update to the HO and its arrival at Wrecksite. You can still ask for Commercial in Confidence at HO and that will stay honoured at Wrecksite. We are still carrying forward C in C's for HMS Amazon and HMS Ullswater.
