\r\n Be aware a neighbour near me just had solar panels fitted and got a free flock of pigeon\'s as well. They appear to have moved in underneath and come out craping all over the place and coo\'ing 24/7. The Council can\'t do anything about it either so consider fitting some mesh if there is a gap underneath for Pigeon\'s to get under and make home.\r\n

\r\n Whats the latest thought on panels then, thought with the removal of some of the subsidy they are now a bit less worthwhile?
\nwhat are the payback figures now?\r\n

panel installers where tripling their money this time last year, hence why i started to install my own, then someone elses, and another. they were ripping people off, even this time last year, solar arrays were costing £4k in parts, they were charging anything from 12-16k to install.
\r\nthe panels are not much cheaper, but the installers are having to fight for the business.
    \r\n
\r\nreally, anyone who wants them, install them yourself, and get a MCS installer to comission it for £150, they will do it. you can get an array that would even today cost you £8k for about £4k, its plug in and play too! no difficult work that any good diy person cant do.\r\n

\r\n Have you bought them outright or are they through the rental/lease/hire scheme or whatever it is?
\r\nI predict major problems in a few years time when people who haven\'t bought the panels outright come to sell their houses. The buyers mortgage company won\'t be happy that they have effectivly rented out their roof for 25 years.\r\n

\r\n I\'m interested what happens when the roof sags, or the tiles need replacing.
\nI\'ve heard that the installers idea of a survey was to poke their head into the attic and make sure there was enough support \'to last whilst we bung them on, and drive away\'.\r\n

    \r\n
\r\nYou can buy the panels and receive surplus tarif in addition to daily needs or allow the company to lease the airspace above your roof and you use the electricity generated for your daily needs while it is being produced with the company receiving a tarif from any surplus. Tarifs haven\'t changed for the surplus but it\'s not something that affects the home owner if they are not receiving them anyway.
    \r\n
\r\nLike many others, I have gone for the latter. The panels, fitting and maintenance are free, it\'s for a period of 25 years and they remove them at the end at no charge. Forecast savings are 30% per annum. The approval process, staffed by the contractor who also has the liability for any damage, includes liaison with your insurance company and mortgage provider and you have the option to make changes to your roof with them removing and replacing panels for free, such as following an extension. Far from putting people off buying a house for sale with them, it\'s a selling point, with all rights transfered. Should the house be rented, this also gives the property the competitive edge against similar property withouit the panels.
    \r\n
\r\nAnyone serious about it, please pm me and I\'ll send the specific links to the company I\'m going with, for further information. 30% savings and fifty quid cash back from my referal is worth a thought.\r\n

you will find that several mortgage companies will want the Solar renter paid off before they offer a loan against the property. at this point, you are at their mercy as to what they will charge you for that, and how long they will take to do it. if you want panels, do the maths, much better to get the tariff and use it to pay off a bank loan (5years) than allow someone to take the real value of the job, the tarrif

\r\nThe contractor who installed them will have gone the same way as all them damp proofers who were giving out 25 year guarantees back in the day.

\r\nMany people just wanted solar panels to get a return on their initial outlay via the FITS and don\'t care if the things never even work. Those who do have an interest in the energy production will be wondering why no one wants to come and repair them or replace the inverter for free in 5 years time.

they have to work, that is how the FIT is calculated in your payment. so if you produce 1000 units in a quarter you get 43.3p x 1000 (FIT) = 433.30 plus 1000/2 x 3p = £15 (see why the free panels are so good for the investor!! all you get as the free panel hoster is the £15 of electricity)
    \r\nif you produce 0 units, you get 43.3 x 0 = 0 plus 3p x 0 = 0
    \r\n
\r\nthe problem will come when the panels and inverter start to break down, or maybe one panel goes faulty, pulling the whole array down. if they have had their lions share of FIT\'s they are not going to spend huge amounts repairing them.
\r\nif you own it, you can decide what you will do.\r\n

\r\nI think it may have reduced to 22p
\r\nand, will reduce again to 9p during the summer

    \r\nPlease check

    \r\nif you produce 0 units, you get 43.3 x 0 = 0 plus 3p x 0 = 0

yes you are quite right, it has now been reduced, so you need to check what your tariff will now be. shame, it was great at the 43p, still some of us got it! \r\n

\r\nThe tarrif route is at the mercy of the government, not if they reduce it but when and not a route affordable to many people. Frankly I\'ve got better things to do with £12k than prop someone up and be left with ongoing maintenance laibility. As an installer you\'re bound to have a different perspective.

if you can dive a rebreather, then the wiring and assembly will be more complicated.

One of my mates has a warehouse unit on a farm... I say unit - it is the most insulated unit you\'ve ever seen in your life - it has walls made of that expanding foam, about a foot thick.
\nOf course originally it wan\'t a unit, it was a \'potato\' store built entirely by a grant, used for a couple of seasons while potato subsidies were in vogue, and now earning the farmer £100 a week!
\nSame farmer is a shrewd bugger - doesn\'t seem to grow or keep much , milks only the system - his latest wheeze is a 10 foot strip around every field - \'wildlife encouragement zone\' - nice little earner and he couldn\'t get his conbine that close to the hedges anyway!\r\n

Not all of them, as usual, as through history, it is the landowners who make the money. I have friends who lease 500 acres and farm organically. They live in a small dwelling and live pretty much hand-to-mouth, haven\'t taken a holiday for the last 20 years. They love their animals, Angus, Sheep and Pigs and work from dawn till dusk including weekends. The chap who owns the land doesn\'t lift a finger save to send the invoices for the lease... I rest my case \r\n

i know of no other business that can grow what they like, when they like, without little thought to market forces, and expect to sell it and make money.
\r\nfarmers nowadays need to look further than the end of the farm gate, and be business men. \'love\' of any animals has nothing to do with it these days (sadly)\r\n

\r\n interesting point BTS, as non building fixed panels i.e solar farms, only get 8p per unit FIT, and if farmers think that is worth the investment, maybe people should look again at costs.
\r\nTBH we are all too quick to look at what this cost, and \'payback\' times on things. yet in reality, you never buy a car or computer etc etc and look at payback times at all!
\r\ni have had mine in for 6months so far, and have generated 4000 units of electricity. there is all the summer to go yet too! so i am well happy. far better than the 0.1% in the bank!\r\n

interesting point BTS, as non building fixed panels i.e solar farms, only get 8p per unit FIT, and if farmers think that is worth the investment, maybe people should look again at costs.
\r\nTBH we are all too quick to look at what this cost, and \'payback\' times on things. yet in reality, you never buy a car or computer etc etc and look at payback times at all!
\r\ni have had mine in for 6months so far, and have generated 4000 units of electricity. there is all the summer to go yet too! so i am well happy. far better than the 0.1% in the bank!

what type of meter do you have?
\r\nif you have the old style with a rotating disc, it will turn the meter backwards, so it refunds you for what you have used already! the newer ones dont. but the power companies are not changing them until they are due. its great, because you get the FIT plus income from generated at 3p, plus refunded for the 13p units you have bought from the power companies \r\n

Sounds good - I\'ll need to check tonight. As I remember - a new meter was fitted about 5 years back - so I might be unlucky!\r\n

\r\n here is a question, as we are all divers, we work with gases.
\r\nwhy if this carbon issue is really dangerous, do we work on the same gas calcs they did years ago? i.e 21% O2, 78% nitrogen, and the rest made up of other bits??
    \r\n
\r\nby now, our calcs should start to show this dangerous rise in carbon gases??
    \r\n
\r\ni am serious about the answer, not being flippant. where is this gas they go on about? and when will it start to appear in our air?\r\n
