Given that YD now has 1000 members, I started thinking about the actual stats  - for example:

Do we have 1000 active members or does this include folk who have not visited the forum for over 3 months?? (or even expelled)

What is the breakdown of the members in terms of numbers of postings, say 0-10, 10-100, 100 - 300 etc

My interest stems from the fact that I have a perception that most postings are made by a hardcore few.

Any comments from anyone (or stats if there are any)

If you look HERE you'll see that Bethi is already in the top 200-300. There is a "lot" of folk registered who've never posted since the board changed the 1st time. Something to do with they had to register to even read a post(I think)
I'd reckon there is probably between 100-150 active pests.

It would be interesting to see some stats on the breakdown.

There will be people who logon often just to read the posts or feel they do not have anything to add to posts.

There will be the ones who asks questions and then there are the ones who are willing to contribute opinions and answers.

I think that generally as people get used to the board they realise that the general attitude is not to shoot people down in flames (unlike on some other boards) and the ones who start posting seem to continue in the same vein despite the occasional conflicting (although usually well thought out) opinions.

The one exception to the above seems to be the DIR boys, who do seem to be getting a bit of a rough time of late, part of the problem I believe is that many of us are reasonably familiar with there methods, kit and approach to diving.   There does seem to be a bit of a trend to light a match (albeit a small flame) when they mention, for example a halcyon wing.  What I guess we need to remember is that their point of view is as valid as yours or mine and OK it may seem to some of us that we have heard the same stuff over and over again but that is because they have a very standardised system.  The new people joining the board who are asking the questions or opinions may not be familiar with it and without the input from the DIR crowd they do not have all the information to make an objective decision.

Sorry, got a bit off track there but lets lighten up a bit and try to remember what YD is about, no politics regardless of agency.  I do believe the success of YD and the number of postings is totally down to this attitude and without it we end up with people who stop posting because they feel they are being attacked at ever opportunity.

Anyway stats....  so what if anything is possible,?

Well said, Daz!!

Most perceptive about the DIR thang.  We may have heard it before, but others might not have.  Something that i had almost forgotten.  Guess when we've been around as long as us.....*sigh*

Well it is a bit more than that really.  It is a holistic system of diving.

It is more than just having all the equipment setup in a certain way and of a certain type.  It is also about having the correct attitude, procedures and fitness levels.

The following sites have some more information on if you want to find out more about what DIR is all about.

**with head in hands, shaking uncontrollably**

NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOO

Peter's really done it now.  The DIR boys will be here before you know it telling us all what DIR REALLY is.

Just putting yer gear together.. tut, tut  Peter you know its more than that.

Its paying a shed load of money for expensive equipment and courses.

Tim runs for cover!

Actually, I've had a revelation.  GI3 and JJ are management consultants!

Why?  Well they go around collecting "best practice" from a whole range of other organisations; they repackage, rebrand and relabel it it under their own monikor and then sell you courses and knowledge at exorbitant prices (whilst at the same time jealously guarding that same knowledge to nonbelie  sorry, non payers).  Then they have the audacity to shout about how great they are for 'coming up' with great systems.  Anybody care to add any more here?

And whilst I'm on the subject, It is said that wannabees shout the loudest.

GI3 sure does make a lot of noise doesn't he.  Just a passing observation.

Before I'm roasted alive, guys - I'm just kidding.

Getting back to the original post.  You used to be able to see the posting stats by member from a link on the forum front page - but now its gone.  Must've changed in the upgrade.

Somehow trying to describe the theory and principles behind gas management, deco obligations and O2 windows to a 13yr old(Intelligent as she seems), somehow didn't seem quite right.
God, I struggle to understand half of it.

Bethi, It's a way of putting your gear together. Trust me!!

Oh no. mum shakes in dismay as Bethi decides that it's DIR or nothing for her and refuses to dive with mum any more and demands full set of new kit ........

Frankly, I think refusing to dive with a mum that takes me to Hull would be verging on insanity. You can be my mummy anytime if she goes over to the darkside. I can be dead helpful round the house, and I'll bet I can lift tanks in and out of the car much better. Adopt me! Give this Digger a home and holidays for a few more years! He'll love you lots in return, and may even buy you a Christmas present.

If you're interested in adopting a Digger, call on 0800-SOD-OFF-DIGGER for your free, no-obligation test-Digger. He buggers off when the beer runs out and the fridge is empty, and if you'd like to take him on long-term, just open a joint bank account with him. He'll love you for it. Yes, he will.

somewhat complicated? It's bloody simple at the moment. Non-existent. Well, I have got a couple on the cards, but I don't like to count chickens, or women, or anyone else for that matter! It'll pick up in autumn. Mmmm... Freshers....

I like to see I'm a source of amusement, though. Blessed is he who can laugh at himself, for he shall never cease to be amused. As long as I'm not laughing on my own, because that would be very sad. Indeed.
