Do you use a flowstop with ADV ?

Hello all,

I am starting this poll to see how many YBOD divers use a flow stop!

I do not like them and believe they are the solution to a problem that does not exist.

If you need to shut it off, use the diluent valve to do so.

if the ADV free flows it will fill the lungs quickly and you will probably hit the surface before turning the valve off,

No different from a freeflowing solenoid stuck open, the drill should be instantaneous.

I had one of the first APD ADVs and it freeflowed, it was not a problem to dump the excess gas and I just turned off the dil.

So it's better to turn everything off, and then put up with a free-flowing ADV when/if you need to manually inject dil; than to just stop the free-flow and still have functioning manual inject?

One of the symptoms of ascent is that if done correctly, you shouldn't need to add diluent to the loop, gas to your suit nor gas to your wing.

ADVs work well on descent, mine freeflowed on the bottom, once loop volume attained no problem.

Also with your ADV now freeflowing you shouldn't need to manually inject, just crack the bottle open and closed..... ;)

Well, that's me told then.....see Matt, I knew I picked the wrong instructor, fancy not telling me about not putting more dil in the loop on ascent :zip:

Just a point of interest, I'm assuming that you aborted the dive at that point, or did you carry on cos you'd got a "stable" loop?

Hi Dave,

I continued the dive, from memory I was at 70 odd metres on a fairly decent wreck.

I changed the ADV for another and that had a small freeflow too. It wasn't noticeable at depth on a 10/52 diluent, however on deco at 6m my PPO2 was crashing to 0.9 in two breaths and I was constantly venting gas. Again I just shut the cylinder off.

I think the ADVs are a great piece of kit, but AP's claim that they fail closed is nonsense. I just don't like their flowstops, they are not as reliable as those made by Apeks IMHO.

I have a flow stop fitted and think its adds safety. But you must never turn it of at depth. I read a story on here about a CO2 hit. The person experiencing the hit was lying on the sea bed unable to move a muscle. He survived by breathing out through his nose and breating in through his mouth to fire the ADV, adding good air. I Think it was DRMike

i think i did tell you however you probably did nt hear me because your adv was in free flow at the time :teeth: very noisey them bubbles are'nt they!
