Day Trip Between London and Manchester?

I'm having a little trouble planning my dive trip to the U.K. in September.  I'll be flying into London on September 5 and will take a train up to Manchester.  I have a day to spend diving.  Can anyone point me to an easy place to get to by train?  I've emailed some shops in Manchester and Liverpool and haven't been successful in lining up a dive.  So, right now I'm up for anything, anywhere: ocean, quarry, lake, as long as its interesting.

I do mostly drysuit cold water diving and am currently in a PADI Divemaster Course.

I did get a PM from Robert Beale but I just noticed another thread on this site and it seems like he may not really exist!  Anyway, I haven't been able to email him back, I get the errors that everyone else is getting.

Thanks,
Tony

Hey Tony,

Welcome back mate. If you'e gonna be in Manchester (my home town, btw), then the easiest gig will probably be the inland site at Ecclestone ('Eccy') Delph - see this link:

http://www.thedelph.com/plans.html

It looks a lot better nowadays, as some of the pics on the above link are out of date, but the site, I believe - and guys correct me if I'm wrong - sports the usual suspects of boat wrecks, cars and I think an APC and Tank! Depth I think now is 20-25 metres. Air on site (don't know about Nitrox) and I can't tell you if they rent kit or not, so you may need to bring your own - fellas, any help here??

Next time you're gonne be in town for more than a day, let us know and we can turn up and make a day of it.

Hope that helps mate. Travel safe.

Bren,

Thanks for the reply.  I will actually be free to dive in Manchester on September 6th and 7th.  I start courses at the University on the 8th so if you know of anything for the 6th and 7th please let me know!

Cheers,
Tony

Tony Hi
will you have your own kit or need to hire/borrow.
Maybe you could get on a Padi orientation course through a Padi shop, that way they might provide kit and transport for you if you need both.
Just a small aside but you are going to have a decent SI (after landing) so as to be safe to dive arent you, there has been some talk recently over here about a risk of diving straight after landing from a long flight. I assume you are flying in from the States.

Matt,

Must have missed that one along the line,  can you point me at the link or just give me the general spiel on what a reasonable SI is. ?

Daz

Edit - Actually just occured to me,  that must be a bugger for the special forces who do HALO jumps over sea

Or maybe they have mastered doing a +5m safety stop on the chute.

Sorry Matt,

concerns over flights & diving are purely, in my experience, down to diving BEFORE flying and NOT the other way around. You can dive the moment you step off the plane mate......unless of course you can provide us here with some Empirical evidence to the contrary??

Nitrogen bubbles in the blood & tissue being compressed, reduced, made smaller (which is what happens when you descend to depth (any depth) in water, you can live with - even after coming from a controlled environment like the pressurised cabin of an aeroplane at 30,000 feet.

It's the same bubbles/gases expanding in situ (blood/tissue) when you ascend without the necessary time given over to their reduction/irradication/dilution - and that includes the necessary safety margin of a 12/24 hr nitrogen desaturation period prior to flying - that is where the concerns lie.

And of course, 'stepping off the plane' can mean both walking down the gangway of your holiday charter.....or the Loadie's tail-lift on a Herc C-130 prior to your HALO/HAHO jump

Bren
did you read the link to Divernet, the suggestion is that the decompression then recompression when landing may cause micro bubbles if I remember correctly. I didnt pay too much attention as I generally wait 24hrs either way. Probably mate-down-the-pub stuff.

Tony,

Like Bren I live in Manchester and would be happy to take you to some local sites while you're over. I can also put you in the right direction for some hire gear if you need it. (And a bit of night life aswell!).

Drop me a line on this forum nearer the time and we can sort something out.

Mark.

Why not treat the lad to a real warm Manc weekend to get him in the mood for his course? Craperwray in morning, Blackpool afternoon/evening - Eccie Delph in morning/Fantasy Bar lunchtime(and evening if he's got jet lag!!) followed by a night on the Golden Mile in Rusholme with a bit of the hot brown stuff to settle his stomach for lectures the following morning!! Just what the tutor ordered!!

<font color='#000080'>John,

A cracking itinerary there - it sounds like the basis for a YD (Manchester Branch) invitation outing!

Anyone else fancy it?

Hey Jonny,

You just may have very well hit the nail on the head with that suggestion! Sounds very much like a play. OK, looks like a troop gig in the offing for the 06th & 07th Sept - North West Styleee:

1. Honourable Guest to the UK - 'Sacramento' Tony
2. YD Ambassador Jonny Holmes
3. YD Ambassador Mark Davies
4. YD Ambassador Bren Tierney
5.

Ball-park itinerary:

Something resembling what Holmesy put up above, including, but not to exclude, sherry, diving, 'Thru'pennies Bar', diving followed by a sherry or five. Yes, I rather fancy the sound of that - YD takes Manhattan !

Right then your North West lot (OK, even the Scousers!), let's be having your names in the ring. Oh go on then, sod it, let's throw the doors open to all and sundry and make a proper Troop Gig out of proceedings. Let's be having you.

bit confused here boys...are we drinking or diving???
If we are diving I could be up for it, need to keep that stoopid grin topped up somehow.

Hi Jules,

Definitely diving - we're introducing a foreign, yet fellow diver around the environs of our diving locale so he can appreciate the wets of offer (e.g. the Cape, Eccy Delph, Anglesey, the Lakes - i.e. Wastwater etc.)

So, join us sister! Bring Lesley, Liz and Chris and enjoy the diving. We can choose where and when we dive - and meet up in the PM both nights for a polite medium-sweet sherry....or two!

See ya there.

now then, I'm off that weekend, but was hoping for some salty action instead of a quarry.  Anglesey?

I've been e-mailing Tony, I'm trying to get a w/ends diving arranged for him at the mo, as well as looking into accom for him & his good lady wife while they are here.

Hoping to use Terry & Yellow Butty Box on "JulieAnne" for the 6/7 Sept.

Will let you know if it comes off.

Hey Chris,

Top idea dude. Are you going for the full boat or just taking up slack spaces?? If so, how many?? How soon will you know so we can get a YD Team Sheet up?? Let us know if it's on ad we can move the gig to Planned Trips.

Happy Days.

<font color='#000080'>Bren,

I'm taking up some of those spaces with Elfyn on the Julie Anne this Sunday. I'll make some enquiries and see what we can sort out - a bit far away from the Manchester hot spots though!

Chris,

Are they planning to stay in Manchester? If so I might find it easier to sort some accommodation at this end. Let me know what they're looking for if you need any help.

Mark.

JulieAnne is ful for that w/end so will try and find another boat. Will get back when I get some info.

Sorry for the late response, but I didnt' know this thread was still active.

Wow, I didnt' think my question would turn into a party!  It would be great to be part of a group dive.  As Chris mentioned, we've been PMing regarding a dive.  Hopefully something in the sea.

Mark, we are staying in Manchester from the 5th through the 13th.  I'll PM you with the details and any advice you can provide as well would be great.

Thanks all!
Tony
