Having just laminated a supply of wordsearh puzzles for those long deco stops and reading of Rubics cube and sliding puzzles in another thread; and glossy magazines (nudge nudge) in another I wonder if anyone has other time killers to pass on?

Ideally they should be small enough to fit in a pocket, be durable and operable with dive gloves.

As a seasonal incentive I offer a bottle of Whiskey to the  best idea (delivered in the UK).

The best Deco distraction has got to be a Game boy you put it in a waterproof bag like the ones used for mobile phones+VHF radios.  I am going to make a housing for mine.  It works well just makesure you have a game in there that you lie or one of those multi games because if you cant get past a certtain level on Super Mario it gets extremely anoying.

Those little Readers digest magazines that you steal from the Drs waiting room are perfect. They fit in your pocket and once you've finished a page you tear it off and throw it away.  And you get to improve your vocabulary while you're at it.

Not one for long deco myself - however........What about...

If you feel a bit more like education........ Take a piece of rope and prcatice knots. Try sorting our your kit configuration. My wife suggests knitting? I'm having her put down.

<font color='#000F22'>As Doug says a cheap easy to read book that you can tear the pages out of. You just leave in a bag on the deco platform and take it out when you get back to the platform. For shorter stops try meditating, but remember not to go to sleep or set your stopwatch /alarm.

I've heard of one diver that gets his surface boat to signal to him when he's due to leave, to get him to wake up as he sleeps during his deco. I'm not entirely sure this is true or a good idea.

<font color='#000080'>If you sleep during deco, your breathing slows down, as well as your whole metablism, and you basically don't off-gas properly, as I understand it. I would do it myself, but I'm a bugger to wake up after a snooze, too!

Someone with a better understanding of the physiology of things will probably be along to explain it.

I usually find myself just lying there waiting. Looking into the green and thinking about women. Then again, I'm a 21 year-old. If someof the guys on these boards did that, they might get a bit over-excited, and we wouldn't want an accident like that, surely. That said, if you're brewathing rate increases, and your heart starts beating faster, couldn't that help you off-gas? Yay! Porn on deco stops! I have a solution! (And an excuse)

Hmmm, nice idea but wouldn't the ahem 'altered blood distribution'  reduce perfussion to other tissues and so reduce the rate of off gassing?

<font color='#000F22'>Digger I'm not sure having a tug would be a good idea. It's possible to get a bend from holding the deco / anchor line in strong current hence use of a jon line. Imagine the embarresment of a skin bend during said activity and the explaining of how it occured.

enough said.

<font color='#0000FF'>I have never had to do a long deco stop before but on the ones that are about 3 - 5 mins long i either look at the fish/view or count up numbers in my head.:p

One of these travel, magnetic chess/draughts boards. Keeps you and your buddy amused(If they can play chess, so that rules out Female buddies then).
I'll PM you my address for the bottle!

<font color='#000080'>I always play scissor paper stone with my buddy.  You get others looking at you like you are mad if they dont undertand what you are doing.

You could try knitting.
Always good for a laugh is to get the silver bag outta a wine box and put a couple of breaths into it at about 20m and let it go - will wake them up on the boat! hehe

eye spy (you either need to know signing or have a slate)

Question:
I thought the pressure stops you getting wood?  And with a DS or a wetsuit on top, how would the mechanics work???!  I'm not even going to start on the p-valve issue...

I take a stopwatch and time my computer because I'm sure the damn thing has minutes 120 seconds long

I found a "100% waterproof" radio for a tenner in WH Smiths.  I think listening to music has got to be up there.  Maybe an MP3 player in a waterproof box?  Have a speaker so your buddy can listen too...

Mmmmmmm porn... Failing that, CAR magazine. Failing that, Autosport. Failing that, Superbike.  If the opportunity to buddy Porg comes up, I'll trash the lot.

<font color='#0000FF'>I'm into the scissors, stone, paper game as well, although some people do look at you as if you've flipped.

I also play mental list games, like name all the James Bond films, name all the states in the USA, that sort of thing. Sad really.

<font color='#0000FF'>When on a 'hat'    Computerized  triva pursuit or who wants to be a millionaire.

When on scuba on my own, just rubix cube.

When on scuba with a novice, which i have been known to do ( 3 minute safety stop ) it feels like CHARADES.

<font color='#810541'>wandering through Woolies this lunchtime I noticed that handheld DVD players are coming down in price - less than £200 now (probably cheaper if you shopped around online).

How hard would it be to make a dry housing for one of these?  You could watch 'Finding Nemo' on deco stops.  You'd have to make sure you chose films that came on one disc though, changing discs half way through could be tricky.

wonder if there is a market to be tapped there?

My M8 Pete told me once that two divers were seen to surface and be flaying about on the water. The boat rushed over to assist only to find they were fighting.

Aparently they were playing cards on deco and one of them cheated.

I wasent there but Pete asures me that it's true.

Mark Chase

PS I do kit skills and then I play a game which involves either seeing how long I can resist looking at the computer and guessing the remaining deco time.
