<font color='#8D38C9'>Hi,

I'm looking at getting my first underwater digital camera soon and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

I don't want anything too bulky, so was looking down a more compact camera approach.

I've heard the Olympus mju 300 is a good "on land" camera, but does anyone know what it's like below the surface?

If not, anyone know of any good compact digital cameras? Want a housing capable of 40m and don't want to pay more than £500, although looking more around the £300-400 range.

Cheers,

Jen

I have the Canon S30 which I am very happy with. I brought it first for profesional use and like the Internet & YD since use it more oftem for diving. I brough the housing at cameras underwater at last year LIDS. Can't remember the prices, something I try to forget easily
The housing though only goes down to 30m. I can place the camera in my BCD pocket so it is a good size. I can also make short 30sec videos which I find very useful.
If you want to save money don't buy the latest digital camera but one that is a few months old. The cameras devalue at an incredible rate and sometimes the differences are minimal.
If yoy search the archives there is plenty of duscussion about the cameras. Have fun and let us know what you have chosen.

I recently bought the Olympus C5050Z, my choice was based partly on seeing Tim's results over the past year, plus many good reviews in various digital camera magazines, plus the fact that the 5050Z has a superbright f1.8 lowest aperture setting whereas most other cameras I looked at were above f2 and light being the limiting factor for UW photography made the 5050 a good bet.  Mind it's not as compact as the C50 which Andy P & Fi have so on land you're less inclined to carry it around.
THe camera cost me £406 inc p&p (on 9mths IFC too
) the housing when I get it will be the PT-015, 40m rating, current lowest price I've seen is £135

<font color='#0000FF'>Don't know much about digi cameras, but a photographer at my club had a mju 400 to supplement his SLR camera and housing on our recent holiday and he got some good piccies out of it.  I think it is about £400 inc housing from Camerasunderwater.co.uk.

<font color='#FF0000'>Just came back from the Red Sea and used a diggie for the first time. It was a Olympus mju 300 with the PT016 housing. I paid £260 for the camera and £99 for the housing. I bought the camera in duty free and the housing in Cardiff, the non specialist camera shops seem cheaper on the housings. The results are pretty good, things need to be fairly close for the better shots and we took it to 40 metres with no problems and its simple to use.
