<font color='#0000FF'>I would appreciate any information on this

I bid for and bought a Sony P10 in December, I have been trying to find the serial number so I can add it to my dive insurance.  Timing said the the serial number should be on the bottom, but it isn't.  I phoned Sony and they said the same thing, Sony also said it should be on the barcode label on the outside of the box, again no label but there is some tacky on the outside of the box where a label should be located.

I have contacted the seller for an answer, but I might not get one.  Does anyone know where I stand legally if I have bought something that may not be all it seems.  The camera was advertised as brand new.  I bid a price I didn't expect to win with and was surprised when I did, now I am starting to think I might have bought a copy or even worse something that may not have a legitimate history.

if it is "hot" then it will be held by the authorities untill the owner can be traced,if the owner cannot be traced it will be auctioned off, possibly ending up on e-bay.
if you get no responce from seller on e-bay then you could follow above course of action.
cheers

<font color='#0000FF'>Hi Guys

Thanks for your comments, hopefully I have a result.  I have just heard from the seller and he has agreed to refund my money.  Hopefully he is a man of his word at this stage I have no reason to think otherwise.

I think I will stay with legit outlets from now on.

<font color='#000080'>I bought a suunto solution nitrox off ebay for £130 ages ago, i took it to scapa and it broke after just 4 dives.  I couldnt do anything about it other than send it back to suunto who gave me a good deal on a new vytec.

I would contact ebay and play hell!

<font color='#000080'>Well Fiona, a lot would depend on how much you paid for it and if it was reasonable. As you purchased it in an auction it's quite clear that you have paid reasonable market value and so have no worries in relation to any possible offences of handling stolen goods.

In terms of ownership it is not legally possible to transfer title in stolen goods. They always remain the possession of the person from whom they were stolen, or that of their insurers following a pay out. However, if no owner can be traced it is possible that the goods can be returned to your possession, as there is unlikely to be proof that the goods are indeed stolen. In this case, however, the previous person possessing the goods is known and therefore you are most likely to have the stuff taken from you.

My advice? If you can, get your money back. I imagine if you have any problems with it in the future no-one will touch it without a serial number. If you can't get your money back you have two choices;
1) Keep quiet (notwithstanding you've already told half the world on the internet) and keep the thing, hoping for the best.
2) Tell the cops, lose the goods (and your money) but maybe help get a fence for stolen goods banged-up.

Not much of a choice really. Stay clear of E-bay!

<font color='#000080'>Hi Fiona,

No one has asked the obvious yet. Does it work? you should have got a USB cable with it, a CD with software and a Sony Memory Stick?

Fiona, Please tell us you registered with PayPal and paid by credit card? This way you can claim on your credit card's insurance. Let us know what your out come is. Oh and name the user name of the seller if you get no joy. Same with Paypal if they refuse to repay the money.
-------------------------------------------
I have a P5 and its serial number is on a sticker on the underside of the camera. I've looked inside the battery case and the camera its self in setup to see if there is a serial number held electronically. No joy I'm afraid. The sticker on the box the camera came with is on the right hand side of the box as you look at it from the front. Not the under side. Its a large white sticker two inches hight by inch +1/4 wide. Its got three bar codes on. At the top is the product code MKP-P5, DSC-P5 etc for my camera and marine case. If these stickers are not there, try looking at the documentation. the original purchaser may have written the serial number on one of the warranty notes?

Good luck.

<font color='#0000FF'>Get your money back or keep quiet, it's your choice - you have 90 days liability with Ebay if it is hot or "not quite right"

Quote[/b] ]Stolen Property

The sale of stolen property is strictly forbidden on eBay, and violates UK, and international law. eBay strongly supports law enforcement efforts to recover stolen property that is listed on its web site, and urges the prosecution of those responsible for knowingly attempting to sell such items on eBay. Stolen property includes items taken from private individuals, as well as property taken without authorisation from companies or governments

If you see an item on eBay that you believe is stolen, your best course is to contact law enforcement immediately. Under eBay's privacy rules, our lawyers will provide important records about pending and past auctions with an official request from law enforcement officials. Please inform the police officer handling the case that eBay will be pleased to cooperate in the investigation, and ask the officer to contact eBay at the email address we've set aside for law enforcement organisations: [email protected] or by fax at: +44(0)20 8605 3001. It is important that these methods of contact be reserved for law enforcement use only, as it enables us to respond quickly in case of emergencies. Emails/faxes directed to these areas that are not from law enforcement will be routed to the appropriate mailbox or individual accordingly and may cause delays in response time.

If you are concerned that your images, text, or HTML in your item description have been used by another eBay user without your authorisation, please see http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/copyrights.html. If you believe that your intellectual property rights have been violated by an eBay auction, go to http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/confidence/programs-vero.html for more information.

<font color='#0000FF'>Just to update, thanks for all the suggestions.  I know I was a bit Naive in posting this but I was very annoyed on Friday.

Anyway contacted seller who phoned me back and imediately offered me a refund, he said that if I returned the item he would refund me on Tuesday, he received the item on Tuesday morning and phoned to tell me he couldn't pay until tomorrow (Thursday), so I have to beleive him as he now has both my money and the item.  If however I don't get the refund I will be straight on to ebay and I did pay by credit card so there is always that avenue.

Cheers Drifty for the information on stolen goods I couldn't find anything about that the other day.

RTFM = Read the F***ing Manual.
Since most manuals are apparently writtenfor people who already know how the thing works, it's one of the most stupid acronyms ever invented, in my opinion. I gave up reading manuals several years ago. Trial and error works much better for me.

<font color='#0000FF'>I guessed as much.

It's not actually working the camera I can do that it is more how things are done in water not air, I don't have a problem on land.

I have been wondering it is might be something to do with looking through the viewfinder of the camera using perscription lenses as things seem to get distorted.

<font color='#000080'>Fiona,

Will you be getting a strobe as I've found the Sony DSC cameras not so hot with the built in flash? I spoke to Sbuccilli last time I was at Capers and he has some Sea & Sea strobe which makes for better pictures. He has a Sony P10 and if your new one from Amazon is the same he might have some tips for getting the best out of it?

Just read your post from 12.42:

Does your camera have an LCD screen? That way you don't have to have the camera right up to your face/mask.

Well I will make sure I take a note of the serial no. of my Sony P10 before the SoM trip.

Just to ensure it doesn't get mixed up with any other P10 that might come from a dodgy source
