Driving a car into water - stunt assistance needed!

Hi there everyone. I am looking for a group of divers to help me with an exciting challenge - I want to drive a car off a jetty into water, and then escape from it when it has sunk!! Please allow me to explain....

My name is Ian Usher, and I am originally from the north-east of England. In 2008 I received quite alot of international publicity when I put my life in Perth, Western Australia, up for sale on eBay. I appeared on TV shows in Australia, England and America, and on radio shows and in newspapers all over the world. See the link below for more info:
Alife4sale.com - Ian Usher is selling his life: car, bike, jetski... as well as his house and everything inside. Buy it and he will walk away with only the clothes on his back

Since then I have moved onto a new project, which is to achieve 100 of my lifetime list of goals in 100 weeks. I am currently 87 weeks into my 100 week journey, and to date I have achieved 82 goals of my 100 targeted goals. My journey so far has taken me right around the world twice, and over the last year and a half I have experienced some incredible things. Again I have appeared on TV, on radio shows and in newspapers and magazines all over the world. See here for press coverage on my 100 goals journey:
100Goals100Weeks.com - Ian Usher has sold his life, what is he doing next?

I am currently under contract to Walt Disney Pictures, who may make a movie about my adventures, and Goal Number 100 is to secure a book deal about the whole journey.

Okay, so one of the goals is to drive a car off a jetty into water, let it sink to the bottom, allow it to fill with water, then escape, just like in the movies. That would be pretty exciting.

And this is where I need help. Here is what I reckon I need:-

1). A suitable site. Maybe a quarry pit dive site, or something like that. When I dived with Preston Sub-Aqua Club in the 80s there was a quarry where stolen vehicles were regularly dumped in the water. They made great dive sites. I can't remember the name of the quarry though.
Any suggestions for a possible location?

2). A car - this is the easy part, I imagine. Any old wrecker will do, as long as it has manual, as opposed to electric, windows, and can drive well enough to get into the water!

3). Divers! This is where I hope you come in. If I can find a suitable site, then I would like to invite the local dive club to be a part of the adventure. Obviously I would like some safety cover - maybe an air tank in the car just in case, and divers on hand with a hammer and knife just in case needed to get out of the car.
Also I would like to get photos and hopefully video of the event too. There is a TV producer in the States interested in possibly putting together some sort of documentary about the whole adventure.

Potential dates:-
I am currently in Kathmandu, and have just finished the trek to Everest Base camp. Next I pass briefly through India to see the Taj Mahal, and then fly to the UK, arriving 28th April. I reckon the best day to try this might be May Day Bank Holiday Monday, 3rd May. Or possibly any evening that following week?

Anyone out there interested in a bit of an adventure?

You can contact me via email through the Contact page of my website:

Many thanks,

Ian Usher

Hi and welcome.

You might not get past 83, your nuts:rolleyes:.

Still saying that there are a lot on here that are nuts as well..:teeth:..
:)

Welcome to YD.

I seem to have nothing to do on May 3rd except housework.

I'll dive it for you, but i cn't help with anything else, i'm afraid.

(yup - i'm bonkers ;))
Hi and welcome. I don't think people have enough adventures so if I can possibly help, I will.

ask stoneycove if you can drive it in there, they could do with a new "attraction"!!!!
Stoney don't really have a pier to drive off.

Swithland. That's where you want to do it. There's a Jag down there already that needs some company. Mind you it's 50m straight down so I wouldn't rate your chances.
Oooooo how about Hodge? I had a jack and a can of oil out of the Escort in there. Mind you there is a teeny-tiny cliff to fall off first.
Wraysbury? You wouldn't get past the sludge.
Chepstow? Now that would be a impressive. Off the cliff in the car park straight into the deep end.

Ah. Got it. Capernwray. Nice jetty to fly off, not too deep.

I think you are thinking of Capernwray Quarry or Eccleston Delph. They have both done similar things in the past for TV. I suggest that you contact them direct.

I think Digger might have a suitable car... ;)

I have a camera and would take photos if you get it arranged.

You're cutting it a bit fine.
Sounds like an interesting challenge but I wouldn't have thought that a regular dive site or sensible water park would want all the oil and petrol leaking out into the water with it's environmental impact so it would need to be cleaned and maybe freewheeled down a hill and off a ramp.

Hi, This sounds like a laugh....

I'd put money on your mates from preston talking about Dorothea... Flooded quarry in north wales. It's not an official dive site, so could be done on the sly, but if the press are involved it'd be best not to do it there.

if stoney would let you drive the car off the slip ramp, it might work... and you'd only be in 3 - 6m of water.

anyway, count me in. :)

Isn't Dorothea an SSSI? What would the Great Crested Newt think? And what's the current state of the ramp and platform at the bottom?

And you certainly need an air source (and to know how to use it - not clear if you are a diver) in the vehicle in case it takes longer than you expect to extract you!
I havent seen anyone die for a while and I need to get my drysuit wet so I'll happily be in the water - dont know quite how much use I'll be though!:shade:

platform is a bit... erm... pikey looking, but there's still plenty of it left to park a landy on ;)

If you were being extra extra safe, I'd want to see the car in front going down the ramp, with a tow rope attached to a proper 4 x 4 or a tractor following down behind.

Don't think dotty is a SSSI, don't think anyone has 'officially registered' the newts... there was a lot of talk about it back 2001 when the owner was applying for planning permission for the landfill, but I gather he went bust, so no-one bothered.

That said... I wouldn't really be happy about all that oil and fuel leaking into dotty... the local kids have put more than enough in there already.

perhaps you could flush out the engine, drain the fuel system, and run the engine just for the take-off using a small detachable can of fuel attached direct into the injectors somehow... that way you could safely recover the small can of fuel, and only a few ml of fuel would remain in the engine...

either that or you strip it all down and attach some rockets :D

You don't need an engine at all to roll down the ramp, but I can see this going badly wrong - what if the vehicle pitches or rolls entering the water and ends up trapping or injuring the driver. Anyone for a risk assessment? :)

Risk assessments are banned... let's just use common sense... ;)

in all seriousness, that IS the one major worry with this I reckon.... the impact into the water would be the other, but can be guarded against....

I imagine that pitch/roll errors on decent could be sorted out with small amounts of buoyancy spread over the top of the car.... if you got it wrong though, you could end up flipping it end on.

Perhaps the car would need to pass fundies first ;)
Err - Oil and Petrol polluting the whole quarry? A lot of logistics to solve with this one - but I'm in :)
I'd have been more impressed if one of his 100 was to bang Paris Hilton. Up the wrong-un.

As Disney are involved and a film is being made I guess this would also fall under the HSE diving at work regulations.

Boring but thought I would mention it.

I reckon a transit might be a better choice in terms of multiple exits if the sh*t hits the fan...
It's not an unknown stunt, so the thing to do would be to find out how it has been done before and what precautions were taken.

There will of course be a plan and budget for removing the wreck from the water afterwards, won't there? And Disney productions will be making a handsome donation to RNLI (or whatever YD charity is current) for the assistance YD divers are giving in helping the OP with his commercial venture?
