There is an item in this weeks New Scientist on reducing/eliminating DCI.
There seem to be two elements in the article - if I understand it right, which is rare - firstly exercise before diving reduces bubble formation and secondly the presence of Nitrous Oxide in the blood has the same effect.
The suggestion is that a pill may be available in the future to boost NO levels.
Could be interesting - doesn't Viagra do something to NO in the blood? Will suits require modification?

They might need to rethink the P-valve...

Sounds very interesting but almost too good to be true.

What's the date on that issue of New Scientist?

Only very  indirectly, NO (nitric oxide) is the "messenger" which activates GC (guanylate cyclase) leading to production of cGMP (cyclic guanidine monophosphate), this causes the smooth muscle to relax which then allows blood to flow through these vessels. Viagra™ (sildenafil citrate) selectively inhibits the action of the enzyme which breaks down the cGMP (PDE5, phosphodiesterase type 5), the consequence being that the cGMP doesn't get turned over

must go and see if we've recieved our copy of New Scientist and see what this anti DCI pill is all about

from Sadovsky R, Miller T, Moskowitz M, Hackett G. Three-year update of sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) efficacy and safety. Int J Clin Pract. 2001;55:115-128.

Excercise decreases DCI occurence

Typical! they find that excercise 24-20 hours prior to diving reduces the chances of a DCI incident.  So instead of recommending that you go to the gym the day before diving, they talk about creating a pill  to mimic the effects of excercise...
A shining example of how stupid the world has become, FFS!!!

My other half commented on the Viagra link!
"
Don't think that it would go down well with the wreckies as it could act as
a potential catchment point!

Could cause problems for cave divers too!

I'm sure Dive Girl could run an article on it though!"

I suspect that if we were planning a dive on Saturday but had to work on Friday taking a pill might be a little bit more convenient.
