Issued: Tuesday 19 August 2003

From the Falmouth Lifeboat Station Web site
to inform you of a recent callout as detailed below :

Boat: Inshore

Date: Sunday 10 August, 2003

Service: Divers in difficulties

Crew: Dave Nicoll (Helmsman), Neil McClarity, Michael Lowres

Location: Off Porthkerris

Weather: N 5, Moderate Sea, Good Visibility, Partly Cloudy

The Action:
Falmouth Inshore Lifeboat was attending the Falmouth Lifeboat Day at
Custom House Quay when they received a radio call at 13:16 from
Falmouth Coastguard requesting that they proceed to assist two divers
who were reported to be in difficulties off Porthkerris. The
Coastguard made a broadcast asking that any vessels in the area proceed
to assist, and the dive boats, Under Pressure and Porthkerris Divers
responded to this request. Porthoustock Coastguard Mobile was also
tasked to assist.

The Inshore Lifeboat left the quay at 13:17 and arrived off
Porthkerris at 13:28. On arrival it was found that the two divers had
been already been located by the Dive Boat Under Pressure and
subsequently recovered by the Diving RIB Porthkerris Divers. The
Inshore Lifeboat crew confirmed that both divers were exhausted but
did not require any medical assistance, and that they were happy to
remain on the diving RIB for the short journey back to Porthkerris
Beach. Once they were landed safely ashore into the care of the
Coastguard Mobile at 13:42, the Inshore Lifeboat was released to
return to station.

The two divers had been carrying out a shore dive, but they had become
exhausted and disorientated, and had drifted offshore. Other members
of their diving club who were ashore had realised they were in
difficulties and had raised the alarm.

The Inshore Lifeboat was back on its slipway by 14:10 where it was
refuelled before returning to Custom House Quay at 14:30.
