One day, after we've eradicated ugliness and bred a strain of gorgeous individuals with all the physical and mental imperfections removed, we'll be going to war over which nation is the most pretty and perfect (probably go down in history as "The Abs and Pecs War" ) - and when that war's finished, we'll be going to war over water rights and rice.
Haven't these wankers ever read and understood the analogies and allegories of Huxley's 'A Brave New World'?? Obviously not......
Anyway, this is nothing new - the council estate beside my house has been churning out genetically identical sprogs for decades now (and what about the Royal family while we're on about it)? The world will always need burger flippers and dog shit-picker-uppers - this is just a different way of achieving the same thing in my view.
Seriously though, it is VERY doubtful that this group of tree hugging hippies (sorry Steve) is actually CAPABLE of doing this scientifically. It'll prolly turn out to be a hoax with a genetically identical set of twins shagging and producing offspring in the hope it'll fool the world (won't work actually for a number of reasons I won't go into).
Hmmm... I'm not THAT kind of tree-hugging hippy you know, these characters believe we're descended from ET's (FFS!)
Anyhoo, as a molecular biologist, I think the reported production of this child engenders a great deal of scepticism: I personally would need considerable convincing from verifiably impartial sources that it was a true clone rather than a scam.
Morally I think it is reprehensible, research on Dolly has shown that clones are born "cellularly old" i.e. if I cloned a child from myself tomorrow it would begin at 41 years old (from the point of view of its chromosomes).
Ageing is partly about shortening of the the end bits of the chromosomes (the telomeres) and no amount of modern science can reverse this, at my age my telomeres are not as long as they would have been at birth, hence "cellular ageing"
If this child is as it is reported to be, I think it is in for a relatively short and unhappy life, I certainly wouldn't do it!
