morning one and all.

I'm in the unfortunate circumstance of having a spare room that smells like an ashtray after a tenant failed to understand the words " No smoking in this flat"

the tenant and i have parted company, well we will of by this evening.:)

does anyone know any good way of cleaning the room effectively and removing the stench of cigarrette smoke, baring in mind i advertise the room as for a non-smoker and theres no way i could let the room as is, cos it smells so bad.:frown:

thanks in advance.

Hi Nick

If the walls are painted try washing them with a nice smelling disinfectant or a mild solution of bleach. If the walls are papered, the best solution would be to paint or repaper as I have found cigarette smoke lingers in wallpaper.

If the floor is carpeted, you might want to hire a carpet cleaner and you should wash any curtains and soft furnishings.

Get some air fresheners such as Neutradol to put in the room too, and open all the windows as well.

So - I trust you will be keeping his deposit - or part of it - to pay for any treatment you will need to apply?

We bought a car recently that had been used by a smoker - and the purchase was on condition that the garage could remove the smell of cigarette smoke. They did. They hired some form of treatment that used an ionising purifier - which they set off in the car..
My understanding is that it releases particles that attach themselves to the embedded smoke particulates - enlarging them - so they can be removed by vacuum cleaners or other methods of cleaning. I don't know whether something similar would work in this instance.. It left a smell for a while in the car - but that has disappeared now. Nice clean car.

Edit: How to Get Rid of Smoke Smell - sounds involved..

As BB has said washing stuff is really the only solution but I used to find the Ambi Pur Solutions After Tobacco plug in used to work well when I was:angel: a smoker. I'd wash what you can carpets/curtains etc and then leave one or two of these plugged in for a couple of days and it'll probably do the trick.

We have just closed our smoking room at work, this was a quite big room 12m x 6m, and as the decorator described it "looked like the inside of a dying man's lung" The walls were washed with sugar soap and 2 coats of emulsion, The ceiling we had to get a specialist company in who chemically clean it then spray painted it. The carpet was replaced. There is now no smell of smoke.
I hope your room is not as bad as this was but a good wash with sugar soap and a repaint and cleaning the carpet should do the trick for you.

Walls washed with sugar soap and a use a scrubbing brush should remove the smell from the walls, but depends upon the degree of staining.

Carpet, employ a good cleaning company. They should be able to do something unless again the smell is very engrained in which case its a new carpet. Same with curtains and bedding, its a difficult odour to remove. Not sure if the hired type of steam cleaner would get rid of the smell from the carpet.
