I've acquired a second hand Bristol Pneumatic compressor, model 4S-24 40RD but am unable to find much info on the web regarding old Bristol compressors.

Gardner Denver have supplied parts list and drawings for the block but dont have any further info.

The unit is running and producing air to the 250 bar the safety valve is set to. It running at about 10.5 cfm . We have been told anecdotally that the max working pressure is 275 bar and rate 18 cfm fad. The owners previous owners didnt know what the cfm should have been.

I'm trying to find a service manual and some general info on what will be the expected output pressure & cfm rating.

In particular the unit has a manual condensate drain(interstage and final pressure) that we like to fit an auto drain valve to if possible(and not too expensive). All the pressure stages connect to a single block which is also connected to the drain hose and to a separate valve. When the valve
is opened the unit dumps through the hose(at a high rate of knots).
Does anyone have any info on these compressors or can they direct me in the right direction.

Thanks for any help and info you can supply.

Thanks for this. I rang the number you had for Hamworthy and got a recorded message telling to dial another number. When I rang that one I was told to ring another number that turned out to be Gardner Denver.

I think that they now hold stocks for Hamworthy compressors as well as Bristol units. They certainly have some parts for the one we have.

Hi,
This compressor is indeed rated at 18 cfm and 275 bars but may be in need of a valve service. If there isn't a lot of oil residue in the filter sump there shouldn't be much piston ring wear.
The condensate drain block, fitted to the lower left machine frame, can be automated by the use of a solenoid fitted in place of the "D" shaped brass plate on top of the valve block. The solenoid should be wired through the machine start system, using a single phase, and a timer.
These machines were put together by MDE in the seventies useing Bristol blocks.

Gardner Denver took over from Hamworthy, Morcome and Bellis but spares for older Bristol blocks can be obtained through Central Compressor Consultants, in Stroud, on 01453 840333.

Central Compressor Consultants would be a good option if you want to get the compressor professionally inspected / overhauled.

IMO doing your own major compressor overhauls isn't worth it - the majority of the cost is in the valve kits and and someone with the prior experience can do the job much faster than you can as you teach yourself and figure things out.

regards

Just a quick note to say thanks for the Canterbury Divers contact number. John Abbatt kindly loaned me the manual for Canterbury Divers Bristol 4S 24 which I've now scanned.
Proper operators manual. "this is how you use it, this is how you take it to bits, this is how you put it back together"!

If anybody wans a copy drop me a line.

Doug

A newbie here. The site won’t let me DM you so trying this way. Do you by any chance still have a manual for the 4S-24?
