Is there any IT folks out there willing to give me a call and talk me through how to fix an ill PC. I have absolutely nothing on my desktop. It's maybe an easy-peasy thing to solve, but I don't know. I do know however that I'm considering formatting the drive to start again. Obviously I don't want to do this at all!

Don't make me beg please, but I will.
Bren T and Jules C have my home 'phone number. Please call..

I know nothing about PCs, i leave that to Matt and Bethi. There are lots of IT savvy people on here so if anyone want to help peter just pm me and i will give you his home number.

Once you do get it fixed though... our pc gets sick very often due to the kids downloading all sorts of stuff from t'internet. When we reformat it and fix it we use Norton to make a Ghost image, this means you can get it back to a known good state quite painlessly. I dont know how this works, matt does it . Do you know any 14 year olds? Again i am sure one ofthe PC gurus on here will be along to help shortly.

Peter - have you sorted it yet? I assume "NOTHING ON MY DESKTOP" means no icons - otherwise there is no point in trying send this message. Try right clicking on a blank bit of desk top and refreshing. Open any program and close it again to see if that restores your desktop.

Have you tried rebooting the PC  - if still a problem try rebooting in Safe Mode (assuming you are using Windows xx). When you first switch the power on you will hear a beep from your CPU (the box you stick disks into) if you press the [F8] function key very quickly - you will get a menu on screen that offers a number of options. Try booting up in Safe Mode and see if that gives you a working PC or not. If this works your PC will be booted up with the bare minimum of programs and drivers and should enable you to rtry and find the cause of your problem.

Alternatively - from the position you described press CTRL + ALT + DEL all at the same time ONCE - don't push twice or you may reboot your system. Depending on what Op System you have you will be in "Task Manager" (if you can see anything) or a menu that gives you that option. Look at the applications that are open in Task Manager and read the message on the right which will prob say "running" and see if any programs have problems.

Apologies if this is a case of Grandma/sucking/eggs. Oh - I suppose the monitor is switched on and the leads plugged in OK.
Of course if that is the case you won't be able to read this so I could say some really rude things.

The problem proved to be beyond me. I phoned Peter and went through rebooting in safe mode - whilst booting up a message came up about a virus in the boot sector of the disk. The AV software on the PC is PROBABLY as originally installed ie no latest definitions.

If anyone else can suggest anything Peter would be most grateful (Win 95 OS).

PM Julia C for Peters phone number.

Hi Peter

I used to work in IT support so may be able to help.  I've PMed Julia C for your phone number but I'm leaving work soon and I'm in a hotel this week so I don't have any internet access outside of work.

When you boot up in safe mode, do you have a task bar with the start button?  Do you see your wallpaper? - If not, how far in the boot process does it get - Switch on, POST screen (usually bios manufactures logo and info about hard disks), Windows 95 logo, DOS rubbish, Win 95 logo again, wallpaper, login prompt (if applicable), desktop screen.

If it is stopping at the virus warning, I would suggest getting hold of a copy of a virus checker from a friend and using it to make an anti virus boot disk.  This will boot your PC, check it for viruses and clean them if it finds any.  You should then be able to boot your PC as normal.

Drop me a PM and I'll try to help

Cheers

Andy

Sorry, I forgot you needed helpful answers there for a moment.

If you want to drop me a PM with your phone number then I'm happy to see if I can help you. I haven't touched Win 95 much since passing my MCSE about four years ago but I'm sure I can still remember its inner workings :)

There is only one way to fix Windows problems....format it and put Linux on.

That probably doesn't help you much but after 20 years of working for IBM I am still avoiding desktop calculators.....now if it was water cooled and cost upward of $1m I would know how to fix it!

In a world without boundaries do we still need gates and windows?
