Ok My daughter is 14 going on 40 but she has never saw tadpoles close up.

The daughter has been out walking my parents dog over some reclaimed waste land where a few ponds are and she has noticed loads of tadpole in the ponds
I have a reasonably good garden pond and was wondering if they would survive and if its an old wives tale about frogs returning to there birth habitat.

Cheers for any info

Do you want some frog spawn as my pond is full of the stuff. I sent a load to Froggy a couple of years ago and I dont think they made their way back here across the Pennines. I got my first lot of spawn from my mates pond many years ago when I first dug my pond out and they been laying every year since.

Don't know if it is, but I suspect so. I had a garden pond, loads of tads each year. Got rid of the pond and had frogs coming in the garden for several years afterwards.

Haven't seen any lately, but that could be because the cats are older or hate me so no longer bring me presents, which is a relief. I never knew that frogs 'scream' I jumper higher than the cats!!

Ditto Bobalot. Pond liner cracked so we had to get rid of it and frogs and newts keep turning up under the plants which used to surround the pond. I do wish they'd stop it because I have to keep apologising to loads of them as I carry them to my neighbours pond around the corner.

As a child we always collected frog spawn from ponds on Dartmoor and took it home to our pond where it seemed to survive very well as we had lots of tiny frogs each year. I'm not sure if fish eat spawn ? We didn't have any fish which would explain why the gnome with the fishing rod who sat on the edge of the pond always looked so p****d off :),

I used to have a pond on my allotment and "seeded" it with frogspawn; certainly from that year on, I always used to have both frogspawn and a lot of frogs around.

If your pond is established and deep enough so it doesn't freeze solid in winter, it shoud be able to support frogs. Do make sure that if it is a decorative pond with vertical sides, there is also either a ramp or an island that the mature frogs can use to get out of the water. :)

And the smart thing about having lots of frogs in the garden is that they eat your slugs. Result.

Let's hope so. Our pond is next to the vegetable patch and is tadpole central at the moment :)
