Diver sets out on monster marathon
(Filed: 29/09/2003)

A charity fundraiser set off on a marathon sponsored walk yesterday along the bottom of Loch Ness.

Wearing an old-fashioned diving suit, Lloyd Scott will spend the next two weeks negotiating a 26-mile stretch of the murky depths of the loch in the Scottish Highlands to raise money for the charity Children with Leukaemia.

He has previously completed conventional land marathons in London, New York and Edinburgh while wearing a similar 180lb diving suit.

The former firefighter and professional footballer from Essex has spent more than a month training and qualifying as a diver. He will be accompanied on the surface by an eight-strong support team.

Mr Scott, who has suffered from leukaemia himself, said he was looking forward to the challenge. He said: "People have said going underwater in the suit was going to be easier because, underwater, I don't have to carry the full weight of it. But in fact it's going to be more difficult because I've got to move against the pressure and resistance of the water. We don't know what's going to be underfoot.

"The visibility will be poor and it's going to be cold and isolated."

He plans to dive for an hour at a time and hopes to cover between two and three miles a day at a depth of about 30ft.
