Record Breakers!? - Extreme Ironing!

2006 Views 139 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  19696
Here's the few mails that I've exchanged on the back of Air Guzzlers thread a little while ago.

I think YD could be a record breaker and go down in history!!! :D
Could make a lot of money for charity too! :) :)

Hi Big Si,
I wrote a brief letter to the Guinness book of records about 4 weeks ago although i have not heard anything back from them, unfortunatley they cannot be contacted by phone  .
I did have a couple of pm's from fellow Yders but not that much interest.

One member Mdemon did give me some contact details for stoney but until i hear anything back from GWR then ist a no show.

Ive just started a new project whihc has taken up some time but now its up and running i should have alittle more time to chace things along.
Thanks for the additional information an di would agree that Stoney would make sence as it more central.

Hi Air Guzzler,

I'm helping out (along with Paramedic Paul and Arfie) with this year's YD charity, RNLI, and Her Royal Highness Scubee is going to be YD Charity grand coordinator extraordinaire! :D

We remembered your extreme ironing thread and I wondered how you got on with this? Did you get much other interest?

It was your baby to start with so in my mind it would make sense for you to run with it and us to support you and help promote / encourage people / etc as much as possible to help it along and see if we can beat the amount YD raised last year for the RNLI?

I'm sure now that the charity has been officially announced and the sun is out and people are thinking about diving more we MUST be able to get many more than the 73 we need to snatch the title from the Aussies!

So it looks like we would need to have someone there to authenticate it. I guess that might just be counting people in / out of the water with gear?

Seem to be few rules...

Extreme Ironing Bureau said:
Whilst the EIB, is a fairly laid back organisation, we have had to put together a few "rules" before we can verify an "official" new record.

Board size: A miniature board is ok (although we prefer to see full sized boards wherever possible). However, it can't be one of those tiny boards. It needs to be at least 1 metre long, 30 centimeters at the widest point and have legs.

Irons: No plastic toys irons, they must be real irons. Travel irons are fine.

Garment: Any garment is suitable, but it must be at least the size of a tea towell. It's hardly impressive to iron a handkerchief.

Ironing: There must be visual proof of ironing (a photo or video clip) and it should be at a recognisable and verifiable landmark. For example, there's enough pictures of the top of Everest to verify that one. And, it sounds stupid, but you MUST be outdoors - no indoor ironing counts.

I guess my vote for location would be on the 6m shelf at Stoney Cove as it's central and if vis is 'alright' people could see it going on from the surface.

Also had vague thoughts on.... press and or TV coverage / see if Stoney will do discounted entry for ironers or make a contribution / celebrity participation / merchandise for the event (t-shirts?) / RNLI involvement/ people getting sponsorship? / donation of ironing boards?... just a few ideas to try to maximise donations from the event....

What do you think?

Cheers,

Si

I like this idea. I could put a few requests on Freecycle for ironing boards and irons to be donated for it too.

A couple of us could go and chat to the bods at Stoney and beg them to allow it. They've done other odd stuff before (I remember seeing something to do with mini''s being floated off platforms on Scrapheap challenge) and I'm sure they could help co-ordinate it.

It would be good if they would give free entry for record breakers too and instead donate the money to RNLI (through us) That would be £750+ straight away!

Add to that merchandise, sponsor ship etc etc and it could be a huge amount of charity cash!

Good luck with that one LOL

Ok... We'll go halves! :D LOL

I'm sure there would be plenty of others dragged along that they could charge who aren't equipped with ironing boards :)
We might stand a chance of entry donation if we did it midweek. To be honest, Stoney is busy enough, but tp get this many people 'extra' in on a weekend might be really pushing it.

The downside of that, of course, is people being prepared to get the time off work. could one of you have a chat with Stoney and see what they thingk? then we could come up with a date, and see how we go.
Well they are open on Wednesday nights anyway and who knows for charidee, they may open on another week night or stay open for an extra 2 hours on a Saturday/Sunday so it could be done after the days diving.

If no-one else has been in before, I'll have a word with them next time I go down. I'm at Capernwray next weekend so I may mention it to them too.

Arfie
I think an event of this size, we should see if the RNLI want to have a representitive(s) present. Who knows, they may even provide some of the surface cover which elf and safety will no doubt require.

Possibly get them to do some sort of display of gear etc even get a rhib on the water if we can, I'd even volunteer to surface swim to the far end to be rescued.

Arfie *note I may have had too much coffee and should be ignored :) *
I think it's important to make these suggestions to Air Guzzler as it was his idea and pitch it that we'll help him rather than taking over.

I know I'd be really pissed off if I tried to do something like that and a bunch of "well meaning do gooders" came along and steamrolled everything to do it their way. :D
I've tentitively mentioned this in my lds and he's fully up for helping out and badgering the members to take part.

I think if Air Guzzler is serious about it, it would be very easy to smash 75.

I agree that 75 should be a piece of piddle!

I'll PM air guzzler and see if he's heard anything from the Guiness Records people.
Guiness people take a looooong time to process things...

Once we have received your signed Agreement, it will then take 4 to 6 weeks for us to research and consider your record proposal.
Will see what Air Guzzler has heard.
There seems to be some interest on the relevant thread.

Is he still waiting to hear from them? Is there anything we can be doing to help him get things prepared?

Arfie
I've just got this message back from the guy that runs the Extreme Ironing site. I don't think the 'record' is Guiness related so perhaps we could just go for it!?

Sounds interesting. I don't do a great deal on EI at the moment
(taking a bit of a break from it), but your plan sounds good. The last
record wasn't even outdoors, which for me is stretching the concept a
little. But then, it is just a bit of fun, so whatever you do, I'll
put it up on the site.

Keep me posted
Phil

PS - I don't check this very often, so you might want to email me at

Sounds good.

Arfie
Sounds good.

NDAC are keen to support us - they apparently have a few ironing boards :D.

I think GLOC may have had a conversation with darren about it a couple of weeks ago - if we can organise a date over the early winter (before the NDAC freezes over :D) and see what we can generate in terms of interest on YD.

Who was in touch with Guiness?
Darren is looking at a date in early January. When I get back to me laptop I will dig the emails out and post it here.

January? Might have more interest in the summer months?

Air Guzzler but he didn't get any response from them
January? Might have more interest in the summer months?
Maybe, but NDAC will be quieter, therefore easier for us to take over

Do you know if he has chased them? or should someone else get in touch? It was his idea in the first place, so i don't really want to steal his thunder
