Sharm Airport Visa question...

Hiya!

I am a little bit confused with some info I have read in a dive book about the visa issued at sharm airport. It says in my lonely planet guide that I cannot dive Ras Mohammed with the visa that is issued at the airport and that it can only be dived on a full visa which has to be obtained before entry to Egypt.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Is it just that the dive operators turn a 'blind eye' if you don't have the full visa?

Thanks in advance

<font color='#0000FF'>Never had a problem diving from liveaboards with the visa you get at the airport.  You also pay the boat for marine park fees, I think this covers it.

Someone will tell me if I am wrong

<font color='#000080'>lonely planet has it wrong. Everyone who goes diving to sharm dives Ras Mohammed, almost everyone gets the airport visa. Perhaps its different if you are going to rasmo by land rather than by boat?

If you are planning to dive Ras Mohammed just get the Visa at the airport before passport control. That is all you need.  If you are just staying in Sharm and local dives only then you won't need one..:)

Agreed, I've been to the Red Sea three times and dived Ras Mo each time - ALL on a visa acquired at the airport. Remember to take your passport with your when you go to Ras Mo: sometimes the Marine Police do spot checks on day-boats and liveabaords and ask to see the passports of the boat's entire company.

Good luck and enjoy.

Thanks everyone!

You've put my mind at rest now....

We're diving the red sea for the first time so want to make sure we don't do anything to jeapodise our chances of getting in the best dives....

Cheers!!!

If you get the chance, dive the Thistlegorm wreck while you're there. Even if you're "more fish then wrecks", as I am usually, the Thistlegorm is amazing for life as well as full of motorbikes + trcuks etc from WWII. It's a couple of hours ride out from Sharm, and you pay some extra to do it, but I've loved it both times I've been.

I hear they are gong to stop people diving it (maybe this year
) so go now while you have the chance!

Have a great trip,
Dave.

Yes the Thistlegorm is a must, its a early start and cost about €60 or so extra, and I would book 15L Nitrox for both dives.  It was the best two dive's in the two weeks
