Sabah Tourism has apparently said that all accommodation for divers on Sipadan will be closed within the next 12 months "to protect the island and its reefs from environmental damage". It will then only be possible to dive there by boat from Mabul or Kapalai, or from liveaboards. People in the dive travel industry seem to be agreed thet the move is necessary, especially as some of the dive centres have flouted the quouta for the number of divers. Let us hope that the decision has the desired effect and that the island can be reopened in a few years with stricter control of the number of visitors and reduced environmental impact.
