I have had my business registered with the FPS and PPS for ages (F=fax P=phone PS=preference service) to try and stop bloody advertising faxes (in particular) and phone calls. I have to say all seems to have gone well and I hardly ever receive telemarketing faxes. Not quite as much sucess on the phone front BUT overall I am glad I registered.

I have just registered for the email PS. It will never stop SPAM altogether
but it may (or may not) cut the volume  down.
Have any of you YDers also registered and, if so, did you notice any reduction in SPAM?

If any of you are interested in registering your home or business for the relevant Preference Service then follow this  LINK.

I just bought Spam Bully. It cost $29.95, if I remember correctly, and is pretty good.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention (thanks for indirectly remining me John) that the Preference Services are free of charge. The service works on the basis that, within the UK, telemarketing companies are obliged to refer to the register and exclude people on the list from their mailings etc.

Therein lies the problem in that unscrupulous companies don't bother and overseas companies are not affected. God only knows how they could try to police the email side of things.

Anyway, there are bound to be some scrupulous businesses out there so registering may help a bit. Also, you can report any companies that contact you when they shouldn't and they will "be dealt with".

I registered with the phone one - not that I get many phone calls, but I kept getting those sodding junk SMS messages, which really p1$$ed me off.

Haven't had any since!

<font color='#0000FF'>So far today I have received 20 spam email, which is not bad as it's generally more on Monday it will be well over 100.

Mine all seem to be from the states and 99% are offering me MORE INCHES or viagra, god if they knew how much I try and diet, why on earth would I want more.

What gets me my company address rarely appears it's always someone else, then when you try and remove they bounch back as un-recognised.

Fiona,
Don't try and remove your address from the list. When you click on the link that should do this it registers with the spammer that your address is live. He then passes/sells the live addresses onto all his spamming friends.

Just delete it!

I was doing this only our illustrious service desk told me to reply and try to opt out.  However I have given up on it now as it takes too long.

Not that I'm vindictive BUT does anyone know how to unblock a spammers email address and force it to accept incoming mail?

<font color='#736AFF'>OK you are all going to love me for admitting this.

I am the accountant for a telemarketing agency, it gets worse, I am also our Direct Marketing Association Compliance Officer. I make sure that our company stays inside the rules for telephoning all you lovely consumers and businesses with products and services.

If you subscribe to TPS, yes the calls will reduce, in about a month (TPS lists are updated monthly at worst), if the call is made from inside the UK, and the caller subscribes to updates for the TPS kill list. It is now almost as cheap for big companies to make calls from USA or India as UK - that is why a lot of call centres are moving abroad.
Howeveryou will not be contacted by many very reputable companies offering services such as broadband internet, cheaper mobiles, car insurance, car repair insurance, etc. All our clients are household names.

Most junk email comes from the USA. So subscribing to email preference service at present is not very effective.

Acquire a good spam filter. I use Mailwasher, the trial version is free and great. the real thing costs about £12. the professional multi-account version costs about £30.

Make sure you have an effective firewall and your antivirus definitions are up to date.

NEVER respond to a junk email.

Be patient. Action is being taken against the US spammers to drive them out of business using litigation.

There is also the Mail Preference Service to stop the junk mail.

If you want more advice please email me direct

Hi Guys,
We use a site at http://www.spamcop.net where you can register the spam mail and let them take care of tracking its source and then sending reports to the originators and to any ISPs between them and you.  The report originates from spamcop itself and NOT from you. In most cases this gets the spammer and/or its relay agent onto a very effective internet black list.  It doesn't always stop the spam but in most cases is effective.  As the site is accessed via a web page there is no software to install.
Hope this helps
