<font color='#000080'>OK, anyone got a good source of spring heel straps? Someone said Andy H made them cheap?

My other problem is getting the right size. How adjustable are these things? If the strap is 2" too short is it going to make a big difference? Basically, I want to try out some before I go buying. Anywhere near the midlands I can do this? Suppose I could go to Capers at mid-late january.

Any idea on cost? Someone said £25 before, that seems awful cheap compared to prices new etc.

Any help much appreciated.

Digs.

<font color='#0000FF'>Last time I checked with Andy he still couldn't get a decent supplier that would do the springs at a sensible price....

Don't McMaster-Carr still do springs..?

Not that postage is cheap, but if you order in bulk..

I got myself two marine grade extension springs with the same spec used for Halcyon etc, from a UK company. I need to dig out the company name etc for you, but basically I've decided to use bungees, or more precisely double bungees for redundancy. I'm no longer too keen on the idea of a spring because I reckon they can easily trap monofilament line etc and must eventually degrade, whereas I can maintain/replace my bungees for a few pennies.

so basically if you are interested you can have my new springs for the price I paid for them minus 20% or something. Or else get yourself some new ones from the samesupplier. I'll get you the details.

<font color='#000080'>Are they made into straps, or is it just the raw spring? I don't really have the time at the moment to make my own, I wondered if there was a good supplier for the complete jobbies.

just the springs. But I remember coming across a bloke who manufactures the complete item here in the UK. Will have to remember where I saw this as it's been a while. have you tried doing a general search under spring fin straps etc? Otherwise you'll just have to buy them in the US as the £/$ exchange rate is so good.

I bought mine from Divers Warehouse, and you 'Do' need to get the correct size because even though they are springs they have a limited amount of movement, the first one's that arrived for me were too small once they were on my Jetfins (achilles heel was knacking) but Bret from D.W. just sent me the next size up and they are great...

Mark Ellyatt referred to Spring heel straps as "line magnets" in a recent article in Diver. I can imagine that  how they could catch a thin lineine in the spring itself. Comments?

I made my spring straps from springs that I got from McMaster Carr.  Very easy to make, depending upon how fancy you want to get with the blocks.

As for the line magnet, I've heard that talked about but never actually spoke with anyone who has actually had this happen, and both my regular buddy and I dive with the springs.

<font color='#000080'>I would imagine that bare (cheap and nasty) springs could possibly trap fishing line but the Halcyon springs are nearly entirely covered by a tough material sleeve which would prevent any line trapping. I have seen other spring straps (possibly the Oceanic ones) covered with clear plastic tubing.

Mark.

and what pray tell is wrong with Bungee?

Priced it up to day,  Halcyon spring heel straps £60

Bungee fin straps £5. (120 dives and still going strong)

<font color='#000080'>Bungee may be better than normal straps but it is definitly inferior to good quailty springs.

Sorry Mark, not good enough

Inferiour?  OK I grant you it will not last as long but then I could replace them 12 times before I am approaching spring prices.

Just kidding!  Springs are a better option and when I have the money not reserved for anything else I am sure I'll take the option.  Until then I'll stick with bungee.

<font color='#000080'>Forgetting functionality for a second, I have to say that XL S/Pro JetFins fitted with Halcyon springs are simply the coolest looking fins and are a joy to use.

Sorry, this is untrue.
Halcyon cover up the springs and make them look like hosepipes covered with a bit of rag.
You need the shiny metal visible within plastic tubing for it to be truly stylish

<font color='#728FCE'>I have to agree with Daz, I made bungie fin straps for my other half's jet fins and the cost about £3. It didn't take long to make them & included the plastic tubing to go over the bungie cord.

DIY Rules!!!!!!

Oh! An after thought, why look the "coolest". Since when has diving equipment been a fashion accessory?
