I've had to go "3rd wheel" quite often. Generally when i travel with family im the only one that's actually a diver so either get a rental-buddy or stuck in with an established pair. Not come across a boat yet that allows solo.
I might just have been lucky but no real bad experiences to report although i do have a habit of letting the pair work as a pair with me just following them so as not to interfere and spoil their dive.
Its not an ideal situation and in the UK i HATE diving as a 3 but if the alternative is don't dive at all, i'll stick to being a spare wheel.
