OK - the costs of running YD are starting to mount up (currently running at about £50 a month) and so I am looking at possible revenue streams to meet the increasing costs if possible. This idea is in its infancy and I'd appreciate ideas!

The polo shirts and fleeces raised about £400 profit for YD but, sadly, its all gone now! I was considering a Paypal donation system where members could donate on an ad hoc basis to help towards running costs. This is by far the easiest method for me to impliment and run but obviously there are other ways and means (some I've not thought of yet!)

Are you prepared to help? Banner advertising has died a death so thats a non starter but any other ideas are welcome.

<font color='#0000FF'>i would be interested in offering yd a vr3.
i would suggest an auction either on yd or e-bay.
proceeds should put a hole in things.

Hi Jay,

Oddly, I was lying in hospital the other day pondering this site, one of the things that went through my mind was how it was getting funded, there is always a cost associated with these things.

If what you want is an annual donation then no issue, I for one would gladly cough up, lets face it, I while away many an idle hour looking at these pages.

BUT!!!!!!!!!!

This site could have, indeed already has much greater potential than that, it is true banner adds don't really work for anything other than viagra, a mate of mine worked for a major publishing house and was paid a huge amount of money to generate a tiny revenue through this sort of advertising, in the end they closed the division.

Maybe you should sit down and think about what you want to do with the site, I have some thoughts but they are not for putting down here, have a think, if you want to talk to me send me a mail I would gladly have a chat.

Take care,

Andrew.

Keep the ideas coming guys and gals - the main problem re advertising is that most (if not all of us) bookmark the forums as a main entry thus bypassing any other pages I could set up. I will be speaking to several UK based dive operators regarding advertising on a main YD site as a matter of course but this is one thing which has been raised in the past when I have tried this.

To give an idea, as we pay for bandwidth;

In January so far we have used 12.865 Gb which costs £38 a month to replace. Webspace, annual charges and domain name charges are added to this as and when required. (We currently have a database that takes up nearly 290Mb)

Yea, sting us for a pound each year to keep things moving, if there is a surplus and you can't keep it for tax reasons, (or embarassment), them subsidise the YD gear. Paypal or whatever is fine, you could give people a months free membership to post and after that it's a pound a year but free viewing.

Incidently, how do I get YD gear?

<font color='#000F22'>I think what you're suggesting is fair. A contribution of a few pounds by each member I'm sure isn't unreasonable. I for one have gained more knowledge and ideas than any £20 I've spent on books, (i think it probably runs into >£100) and to meet like minded divers and exchange information and advice has been very worthwile.

Keep up the good job.

Talking of bandwidth, webspace etc. I get some free with my connection but don't use it, can I donate it??

On reflection, my previous post does sound tight, it was based on 1400 members, half of which will be "virtal" or inactive x £1 gives the £600 a year to run. Make it a couple of quid.

Cheers Gareth - I've printed your contribution off and will be banking it tomorrow
 - reminds me of a great American scam where (in the past as I understand it), all denominations were printed on the same sized notes. A gang of crooks therefore blanched a load of legal 1 dollar bills and printed 100's on the same paper. Watermark was right etc! Great scam if it was true!

Thanks but no, the databse won't work like that (otherwise I'd have set up a number of other accounts!). You're right inn that we probably now have an active membership of about 200. I want to keep YD free to the masses as otherwise it will die so thats why I reckon that voluntary donations (together with an acknowledgement of their status) may be the best answer

The problem with Paypal is that they take a percentage of every payment and on lots of small payments this works out to be quite a lot. You would need to make it clear that there is a minimum contribution of say £1. Otherwise if people send 50p every couple of months you will only get about 20p of it.

I would also be interested in the YD gear.

Another idea
There are quite a few trips and training sessions organised here which are cheaper than we can get them for individually. How about suggesting people make a donation. £1 when they go on a group organised trip etc...

due to the lack of cards that I have, paypall is out.
However if in this age of internet banking, you were to have some bank account details (account name, sort code, and account number). Money could be transfered into it by anyone who wanted, and no one would take a cut of it.

And yes I'd put £10 in it anually if that was what was needed.

Jay,

I raised the question of you're funding a while back...and at that time you hadn't thought of it...I sent you an extra 10 motes for the bandwith charges...what more do you want than 10 quid per YD user.

I'm a chartered accounant and I'd be more than happy to look after and administer the YD coffers in an offshore account. By the way, that is a serious offer....lol. HONEST

An old slogan runs.."You'll sleep well with a Chartered Accountant"...imagine the risks we take underwater...

Dude,

You know my thoughts on this. Put me down for £200 a quarter - I spend 'the odd minute' here on YD and so it's only fair and right that I pay for the privilege of being a member of the place which brings me access to raucous banter, diving, new buddies, top diving trips-n-tips, serious amounts of 'laughiette', good natured and involved discourse, is NOT a PC Nanny State or a school-for-numb-nuts (a la 'Scuba-bored'), and a world of info is also something for which I pay.

If we're all being honest, a number of us pay for SKY TV subscription, sports/health club membership, the local parish philately bi-annual naked group conclave and other things which we feel add in some way to our day. YD features high on my list in this respect. You may feel that I'm here a lot and posting endlessly, but the genuine draw here for me is reading the japes, jaws, dives, cries, mixes and fixes of my fellow YD'ers. Let's face it, the site wouldn't be the same without ALL of you/us!!! We're a colourful, multi-cultural mouthful of a mix - AND ALL THE BETTER FOR IT!!!! I, for one, would hate to be deprived of it or see it lessened in any way.

To keep that ship in ready, robust and rude health, I think it only fair that we, as many as feel able and willing, put-to to keep her going - and especially since ALL the costs of running the beast and happy-home that is YD have been coming out of Jay's-n-Tanx-a-Deux's pockets for three and some years since her birth.

Happy to contribute. WHAT SAY YOU CHAPS AND CHAPESSES??

[Mortgage WARNING: Your '2nd Home' is at risk unless you are able to meet payments.......!!!]

AGREED.....

I can tell you something ...when I nip back to the UK now and then and I mention YD..."Oh yes, I've heard of them"...

It's a great forum....no bollocks, occassionally politics but why not...I have learnt so much sat in front of my pc, SeaDart Bob sorted me out with some stunning dives off Swanage on my trip back to the UK last year. My TDI cavern diving course buddues...from here...

How much do you need?
