Time to update from that old fashioned sat nav known as a map book to the modern world. The question though is which sat nav. I suppose the primary requirement is must be updateable. I suppose knowing where speed cameras are would be useful? What other features are recommended as essentials rather than luxuries? There seem to be several models out there so which one would you recommend.

Guidance from those who are already in the 21st Century would be most welcome.

Mines built into my car and works really well but swapped cars with a friend last week so he could move some furniture to his mums he had a tomtom and i was very impressed with it not quite up to fully installed job but certainly more than good enough i'd buy one.

I love my Tom Tom (and I am a bit technophobic!!). It is easy to use, accurate and the alerts when there is a speed camera is brilliant!

I have Tom Tom 710 (which has the maps for europe). I used it in the UK with the Speed Cameras set work which worked well, however there are sights that have better listing for speed cameras than that of Tom Tom - I can't remember out of my head but will post it when I do.
One of the main features of a Sat Nav are the quality of Maps, from what I understand there are two main suppliers that supplies the software for the satnav companies. the regularity of the updates varies quite a bit.
Overall I can highly reccomend the Tom Tom.

I get my speed camera database from Pocket GPS World (I think that's the address??)

Recently got rid of car with bulit in and went for a Road Angel 7000 (can also be used in Eurpoe) this can alert for:
speed cameras, black spots, railway alerts, school zone alert, congestion zone alert, fatigue timer alert, overspeed alert (you can set it at your preferred speed; husband thought it would be funny to set it at 20mph...ha, ha, ha...it drove me mad!)

I looked online and found the best price was from John Lewis £179 vs £249 rrp, ordered on line on normal delivery and it arrived within three days; nice one.

Well I'm going to vote again for ALK CoPilot installed on a pocket pc/telephone (something like the orange SPV M600 or M3100). If you're on a contract, get a dirt cheap upgrade and buy the software & bluetooth GPS on fleabay for fifty quid.

If you're with O2, they even do the phone/sat nav system as a package.

Just my two Roubles.

I'd second the CoPilot, just got a T-mobile MDA Compact III which has GPS built in. Best thing is, if you pay the extra £7.50 a month you get unlimited internet, so I have the phone check for traffic regularly during the trip.

Phone is free, of course the contract costs a bit, but it's an excellent contract at the same time! Proper web browser and everything

Speed cameras come from pocket GPS world, I think about £20 a year.
