Women and diving

As a female diver with a diving husband, we learnt and dive together :embarasse I sometimes wonder when I go to dive sites and see a majority of male divers, why there are not more women there?

So I want to ask the guys - do you have a non diving spouse/partner/significant other, if so what are the reasons they do not take to the fabulous underwater environment?

And to the women on here - What got you diving and does your spouse/partner/significant other dive?

My divorce got me into diving :)

I don't have a significant other, but if i did, he'd have to dive otherwise I'd never see him.

Mine can't swim, doesn't like being in the sea, doesn't like physical exertion and doesn't like getting her ears wet.

[edit]She also finds divers boring because they talk about diving too much.

Mine will dive when the water is crystal clear and above 20 degress C.
All the girlies I know who don't dive don't want to because it would mess their hair up. They swim with their heads above the water too.

Us that do it are obviously

a) well 'ard

and

b) have no pride in our appearance.

A snotty face and a nappy are not seen as trendy in today's fashion and glossy mag obsessed society.

That's my theory.

I was just talking about this with my missus last night. We dive together, and we used to live in London in a club there that had quite a number of active diving couples - some who had met through the club, some who joined together. The club we're now in, in Brighton, has far fewer couples - I think there are one or two others, but really not many - and far fewer women also. Maybe its viewed as a macho sport? Maybe blokes use it to get away from their other halves? Dunno, but I reckon they're missing out.

Whereas my diving got me into divorce (well, that and a whole other heap of sh*t) - he never dived, but was into sailing - whatever floats yer boat I suppose ;)

When I learned to diver, ooh, about a million years ago - five of us started the course, two of us finished it, and once he'd qualified, never went in the water again.

As for my SO - well, we've dived together, not that you'd have noticed - it was pretty much same ocean diving really  :D
My fella was the one to introduce me to diving. He will usually be my buddy. Since I spent most of last season pregnant, I now find myself more often than not holding the baby while he dives, rather than having the opportunity to get in the water myself (note to self - this will change as the weather improves!).

My old club at Eastbourne had several female divers, usually the partners of other members. My current club has 2 female members - me and 1 other. Most of the other halves either don't dive, or only in warm, clear water and so never come to club nights (I must point out that the club has approximately 15 members)
My ex hated it. She tried it, but she was one of those stupid screechy things if a bit of seaweed or a fish came near.
That wasn't why she's my ex.

I went diving one holiday, she went on the razz with a Turkish waiter. Bye Bye:D
Women diving!!!!!

The very thought...next you will be wanting to vote and have your own range of pleasure toys!!!!.....Get back in the kitchen and stop this ridiculous hoo haa right now!

BTW...Mrs Me dives, she started so she knew what I was rabbiting on about, doesn't like it cold and dark or too deep, loved the dolphins we saw while out on the boat yesterday...Always dives when we are on holiday, liveaboards and shore based, doesn't understand why I like wrecks....well..she is a girl....

I don't know for certain but UK diving is, or can be, fairly tough.

Gear was heavy (and maybe still is) :). I was pretty fit when I dived but I was always shagged out after a days twinset diving.

Perhaps if I go diving again I can get (as PV puts it) well 'ard again.

[edit]Oops, perhaps I meant 'be'?
:)
water scares my wife she won't go near a pool.she shouts at me for taking my 12yr old daughter. i tell her if she goes abroad later on its better to work at a dive centre than waiting tables that carmes her down a bit
Mr Helen and I learnt to dive together in a freezing reservoir in December 2001. Our first 'proper' dives were in the Maldives, with Sacha the nubile dive-guide leading the way. After an hour in bath-warm, gin-clear water he announced that "you can [email protected] UK diving". So off I went and did the UK stuff myself. Since then he's done a few dives on foreign holidays but hasn't bothered for years now. It's just not his 'thing'.

He does have his own hobbies though, and being married for 20 years it's kind of nice that we have our own interests to talk about rather than being joined at the hip.

Me, I love all the banter, piss-taking and cameraderie that goes with it. I was always a tomboy as a child and grew up in a close family of male relatives. At school I had more male friends than female. So, hanging out with the boys is much more my thing than girlie chats about boyfriends and make-up. The female divers I know are very much like me.

is that why you've not been in the water for a significant period of time?
we almost always have more girls than guys in our club

It's a combination of elder family matters and I seem to have lost my mojo and pleasure in things in general.

I still hope to make a return to diving although I am dreading the service bill when I do ..... twin 12s & 10s + a 15/12/5/3 ltr + regs/first stages ......... probably need new d/suit seals.

FFS, when will someone start producing oxygum?

We have six I think, maybe 7 so about 15%
Some of the best divers I know are women:
Michelle Cove
Sam Harwood
Steffi Schwabe
Caroline Skepper
Betty Almog
Anne-Marie Kitchen-Sink
Claudia Pellarini
Karen Shaw

..to name but a few of many.

I used to envy those who had wives who dived - so I got myself one.

I would rather dive with her than anyone else.

(Not bad for a mysogynist, eh Morag?)

However, it must be said that the wives of club members (not just diving clubs) discourage single women from diving on their husbands.

I used to belong to a BSAC branch in London that had lots of single young women members. I often went away with them for weekends and dives were always called off. Then I discovered it was really a shagging club ...They were up all night and I wanted to go diving! (What a poor fool I was!)

You say that but I've never met another female diver who smokes a pipe and wees standing up.

Failing the oxygum, I'd be delighted to accompany you on some refresher dives Bryan. :)

Anyway there is a perfectly good reason why girlies don't dive as much as normal people and it's to do with safety...

Number 7 sounds dodgy. Are you certain you can't tell?
