HMS BRAZEN
There were men at the guns still firing seconds before Brazenwent down and though her anti aircraft fire was resposible for 2 German dive bombers the Luftwaffe got her in the end on July 20 1940, when she was escorting convoy CW7 though the Straits of Dover. The german bombers cripled her with a near miss bomb under , near the engine room, which broke her back. she sank under tow . Casulities were light , with only one man dying from wounds after being taken off with the rest of the crew. The BRAZEN was one of 9 "B" class destroyers built in 1930-31. She entered navy service on April 8 1931. Her wartime crew numbered 175, her tonnage was 1360 and her length of 323 ft had a beam of 32 ft . her armament was four 4.7 in and two 2 pounder anti aircraft guns, together with eight 21 inch torpedo tubes . her steam turbines developed 34,000 hp and could be pushed along at 35 kts.
Toda she lies at 30 mts and stands 8 mts proud, she is upright and despite sweeping most of her super structure is still in place. Her bow points to the North West. One of her AA guns still points up to the sky ( BIG lobster lives in it ), the other has fallen to the deck. her heavier guns are all in place, but german bombs seem to have blown her stern off-certainaly you need to swim back over a sandbank amidships for some distance to find it and her two loaded torpedo tubes. Entry can be made behind the gun turrets , though it is silting. bunks can still be seen and rows of gas masks and .303 ammunitiuon is littered around.
